Quirky head floating around.

@RealSci_Nano admin

I find myself coding in short bursts rather than on a daily basis! This is because I have other tasks to do, like analyzing data or writing manuscripts!

But if you catch me on a coding day, my screen might look something like this!

Hello! I’m Amber Lim, and I will be your guest scientist this week! I’m a chemistry PhD student in the Fredrickson group at the Department of Chemistry at UW-Madison by day, and also an art-loving, D&D-playing nerd 24/7! This week I’m going to cover πŸ’ŽCrystals! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ¨ Comics! & πŸ’» Calculations!
πŸ’Ž Crystals! I study intermetallic solid state chemistry. In molecular chemistry, the kinds of chemicals we study are often smaller, singular units. In solid state chemistry, our chemicals are linked together in one large unit that extends beyond the atomic scale.
Crystals are one type of solid. In science, we describe crystals with a unit cell, which gives us information about how atoms are arranged. These unit cells repeat in 3-D space, very much like a 3-D wallpaper. (Comic excerpt from our group website: https://www2.chem.wisc.edu/~danny/comics/Periodicity/)

Of course, there's experimental aspects in this field of work too! I used to do experiments as an undergraduate researcher, but I have since turned my focus to pure computational work. I do miss getting pretty crystals though! (CuP2 below)

I had a lot of fun talking to Chris Brewer about his research and career path!

Follow along and learn with me how Chris solves molecular puzzles 🧩 (aka precursor design for the scientist) for chemical bathtubs πŸ› (chemical bath deposition) to create new materials

Someone had to say it! πŸ€—
Having discovered my love for Physics that week, I decided to do a BSc in Physics at the same university. During the 3 years, I learnt I love experimental work! I also enjoyed my time as a uni student, with a bunch of traditions, like the "traje" we are wearing in the photo!

πŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹KISS of lightπŸ’‹πŸ’‹πŸ’‹

This week's episode ft. Antonija Grubisic Cabo is full of travelling scientist stories, group of travel besties and of course what is KISS of light!
