Tried @tapaninaho's rairai bread for lunch. Pretty darn good with butter and with avocado. The acid test will be my partner's mum, who visits Finland regularly and swears by their rye bread. Keeping some in the freezer for her next visit.
RaiRai is a Finnish greeting that urges you to enjoy life. I certainly enjoyed my lunch.
Had the beach to ourselves while we sat with coffee this morning. Up on the West Coast, 20 miles or so north of Gairloch.
I was late to this but it was well worth the wait. Full of gems about the creative process and the craft of screenwriting.
"I've got quite high-flown and fancy beliefs about art that maybe put it all into perspective. Principally, it is not a democracy. Creating something is not a democracy. The people have no say. The artist does. It doesn't matter what the people witter on about; they and their response come after. They're not there for the creation."
Piran is a very pretty seaside town on Slovenia’s short Adriatic coast. Great food, great wine, lovely swimming.
On Sunday we made a day trip to Slovenia’s second city, Maribor. We’d hoped to have a quiet stroll along the Drava River. But it was Red Bull Flugtag day. Thousands and thousands of people lining bridges and the riverbanks to watch Monty Red Bull’s Flying Circus. I never realised how big this was. Quiet it isn’t.
Slovenia is fabulous so far. Beautiful country and lovely people. Ljubljana is lively, pretty, and quite a happening city.
Packed house for the Scottish Documentary Institute screening of four Bridging The Gap films at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this afternoon.
Got to tread the red carpet and see powerful documentaries about the British legacy in Palestine, grief & spiritualism, the personal experience of a Muslim woman in Scotland, and the lifeboat crews of Dungeness who have been ostracised by their mainly anti-immigrant community.
(I am a trustee on the SDI board.)
Half Man | Half Bull is classic Fringe brilliance in two parts. Wright & Grainger reimagine the myths of Theseus and Daedalus with brilliant storytelling and songwriting. Somehow intimate and epic at the same time, in the fabulous setting of the Summerhall Dissection Room.
Great evening last night at the wonderful Portobello Town Hall. Three poets, a musician and an ex-first minister of Scotland. Hollie McNish, Gemma Cairney, Michael Pedersen, Rachel Sermanni (Scotland's answer to Joni Mitchell), and Nicola Sturgeon. Culture innit? (Sorry for the poor quality photo).
A few days of R&R on the west coast. The view from our local’s beer garden is not bad.
