Hi #geneadons
I see the results of the "DNA-reveal" on Christopher Columbus are out. Spanish and Sephardic Jewish.

My original post needs some important context added as there are some criticisms of the research, specifically.
* The research has not been published or subject to peer-review.
* There appears to be no isotope analysis to support the Spanish origin.
Specialists criticize the absence of scientific evidence in the RTVE documentary featuring forensic expert José Antonio Lorente, who has not published any analysis since the exhumation in 2003 of the alleged tomb of the explorer
Hi #geneadons

If you are interested in a more deep dive into these results the the DNAPainter tool is a great way to match regions to Ancestors. Here's a blog post from Jonny Perl on how to do this.
AncestryDNA have just launched their latest ancestral populations update. One of the changes I can see is that I'm now considered to be 7% Dutch. I could just smile about this and ponder whether it influenced me moving to Amsterdam as young man. But since AncestryDNA have also updated their Chromosome Painter, I can also analyze it in a bit more detail.
Hi #geneadons ,
Today seems to be #AncestryDNAupdate day. Ancestry has rolled out their latest iteration of their "Regional Ancestry (aka Ethnicity Estimates).
For people w. British heritage the new results are coming across as slightly odd. Gone are some of the Scandinavian ancestry, but some new "odd" sub-regions e.g. "Italian Switzerland" and "Chanel Islands".
Anyway, here's my new results.
As ever, it's worth using the SideView tools to dive into the results and see the details.
Results show no mtDNA match between the two samples, disproving the idea that he was the lost prince.
The study is published here:

Interestingly the sample from Stéphanie Bougaran was done via igenea.de, the FamilyTreeDNA reseller in German-speaking counties and was actually ordered 2013.
Hi #geneadons
A new study of Kasper Hauser's mtDNA was recently published.
He appeared on the street of Nuremburg in 1828 and claimed to have been brought up in a darkened cell. Theories at the time claimed he was the son of Charles, Grand Duke of Baden & Stéphanie de Beauharnais
The story of Hauser is well known in Germany
The recent study took new DNA samples and compared them w. Stéphanie Bougaran, who is maternally related to Grand Duchesse Stéphanie de Beauharnais.
Interesting reporting from the Times. I’m personally not sure my identity is driven by my DNA, but perhaps I would feel different if I had some surprise results 🤷‍♂️

I've written about my "Ethnicity Estimates" from the various DNA testing companies a few times.
I've finally got around to updating the blog with my current estimates from all the major testing companies.
I've also tried to put the Scandinavian ethnicities in the context of the "Viking" connections to Britain.

As the paper says
"Our population-scale results indicate that, on the whole, the region of Cambridgeshire during the period of Roman occupation was composed of genetically homogenous, local populations, with limited long-distance mobility during their lifetimes and that the large-scale movement of Roman empirical forces left little impact on the genomes of these local, rural populations"
Hi #geneadons
Something of interest for those with roots in Britain.
An AncientDNA study was published last week. It looked at new DNA samples from rural Cambridgeshire during the Roman occupation.
