Das Fediverse ist super dezentralisiert! Nichts, außer einer Hetzner Outage, könnte es down bringen.

I totally missed that #ESA (European Space Agency) had a pride shirt again this year! I haven't ordered it yet but you can bet I will when I get back from vacation. Too late for June, not too late to just wear it every day, as one should.

Magic: The Gathering is Turing Complete

$\textit{Magic: The Gathering}$ is a popular and famously complicated trading card game about magical combat. In this paper we show that optimal play in real-world $\textit{Magic}$ is at least as hard as the Halting Problem, solving a problem that has been open for a decade. To do this, we present a methodology for embedding an arbitrary Turing machine into a game of $\textit{Magic}$ such that the first player is guaranteed to win the game if and only if the Turing machine halts. Our result applies to how real $\textit{Magic}$ is played, can be achieved using standard-size tournament-legal decks, and does not rely on stochasticity or hidden information. Our result is also highly unusual in that all moves of both players are forced in the construction. This shows that even recognising who will win a game in which neither player has a non-trivial decision to make for the rest of the game is undecidable. We conclude with a discussion of the implications for a unified computational theory of games and remarks about the playability of such a board in a tournament setting.

Still one of the best home improvement hacks I’ve ever done. Not a single regret and very happy I did it every time I have to wash the windows or one of my bikes (on a balcony).

And Gardena hose is more robust than shower hose, fight me.

And this is available to all apartment dwellers. These are standard Gardena parts between faucet and shower head. Other systems also exist.
@bix Funny, I once built an outdoor shower from Gardena parts (the original Gardena shower only delivered cold water, my hack adds a warm water supply from a solar hose so you can adjust the temperature). It was even featured in the German edition of Make: Magazine., in 1/22, to be exact.
@bix I’ve done the same with the outside shower on my campervan. It makes hosing down filthy dogs much more convenient 🐕🐶🚿
@bix you can also connect it to your tv
@bix what parts exactly did you use to adapt?
@Dingsextrem Gardena sells various versions of the screw on connector that you insert in the orange thing. One fits my faucet and the other the shower head. I don’t have the packaging anymore so can’t give model numbers, but any Gardena dealer should have the parts it’s all standard sized threads etc.
@bix @Dingsextrem this should be the "15/21" or 1/2 inch thread. This is the standard "middle size" pipe thread.
@bix Take care, not all hoses are rated for warm/hot water (but otherwise great idea!)
@kunsi @bix Solar hoses should work just fine. Certain discounters have them on sale every once in a while.
@bix holy molly this is perfect!
@bix Heck yeah. I love Gardena fittings. I will not permit any other hose fittings in the garden ever. <.<
@bix The shower head doesn't fit into a riser rail that way, but otherwise 👍.
As I have a bathtub mixer with dual outlets, so I use a (detachable) "gardena indoor tap connector" for my balcony hose.
@bix oh wow… that actually fits? I’ll have to try that!
@dunkelstern with the right screw on connector thingies, yes. But it’s all available. Measure both ends, go to the relevant website(s), choose the best fitting option and Bob’s your uncle!
@bix This is also handy if you need to water the plants in the bathroom
@bix Doesn't convince me if it doesn't use USB-C.
@nik
Well, then we need a new version oft this:
@bix
@bix For even more flexibility, I'd prefer a wireless solution.
@bix Using it just for cleaning or also to shower?

@bix

Unless you buy these metal-wrapped hoses, they are very durable. The metal-wrapped ones scratch the bathtub (esp if it's made from acrylic plastic) and the metal spiral falls apart quickly, so that the sharp edges cut the thin inner hose.

Buy the cheaper ones made from thicker plastic.

@bix how did you make a photo of my bathtub?

@bix

👍 Laugh, that's exactly what I did. It annoyed me that the metal flex hoses always cracked after a certain time and were so stiff when cold. I also use a Gardena multi spray instead of a shower head (it's also easier to remove for descaling). I have an adapter on some water cranes, which makes it easier to fill a cleaning bucket with a short hose, for example.

@bix
Master gardeners' bathroom.
@bix But I guess you can't fix it any more in the holder?
@1000millimeter true, but I was t using it anyways
@bix Well, I only have it up there, so unfortunately no solution for me. But interesting nevertheless.
Why don't you allow your bike to use your shower? Would be way simpler... 🤔
@bix
@Xitnelat doesn’t fit without hitting lots of edges etc
@bix i hate the optic, but i love this idea to refill my heater mhhh....
