@CartyBoston Weirdly, during the 2–3 years in the late 1990s that I earned a stupid amount of money, I was always stressed, worrying about when it would stop.

When the gravy train did grind to an abrupt halt (with the 2000 dot.bomb tech crash), I discovered I was much happier. I had some free time. I took up hobbies. I didn't have to travel as much. I wasn't running so hard in the hamster wheel to impress my consulting clients and justify absurdly-high hourly rates.

Many of my peers abandoned consulting and took 9–5 jobs. I stayed, but slashed my rates by 75–80%, stopped playing the "superstar" game, and had the opportunity to work on lots of great projects with wonderful teams and still earn enough for a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle. And I knew there was always other work available for what I was charging, so I wasn't waking up at night worrying any more.

I finished my full-time career with 11 years of aid-data work for the UN, which was amazing.
