New today: @ithaka_sr just published a report analyzing the second digital transformation in scholarly publishing, by Tracy Bergstrom, Oya Y. Rieger, and me. We offer 25 recommendations for advancing the shared infrastructure that supports scientific and scholarly research, including immediate investments as well as longer-term policy and research collaborations. https://sr.ithaka.org/publications/the-second-digital-transformation-of-scholarly-publishing/
The Second Digital Transformation of Scholarly Publishing - Ithaka S+R

The scholarly publishing sector is undergoing its second digital transformation. The first saw a massive shift from paper to digital, but otherwise publishing retained many of the characteristics of the print era. In this current second digital transformation, many of the structures, workflows, incentives, and outputs that characterized the print era are being revamped in favor of new approaches that bring tremendous opportunities, and also non-trivial risks, to scholarly communication. It is our objective with this paper to examine the needs for shared infrastructure that will support this second digital transformation.
