Living carfree/carefree in Melbourne. Interested in a stable climate and urbanism, radicalised by an ebike. Lived in Helsinki for 7 years now I expect to travel around my city safely by bike.
A nice infographic demonstrating the different needs of transport for men and women. I think Melbourne councils should consider this when planning transport. So many short trips could be replaced with active transport if safe options were available

#SchoolStreets protect kids from cars and pollution, and create space for #BikeToSchool #FreeRangeKids, #depaving and greening streets. All you need to do is push car traffic a block or two away from the front door for at least a couple hours of the day.

Bah, I am quite honestly devastated at the thought my council #MerriBek will not be spending additional money on bike infrastructure in the next 4 years!! It will have some of the highest density residential areas in Melbourne, 6 out of 11 councilors talk about "sustainability" or climate in their bio's, do they think everyone is going to be able to drive?? https://brunswickvoice.com.au/betrayal-bike-users-group-lashes-council-over-abandoned-projects/ I've made a submission here https://conversations.merri-bek.vic.gov.au/council-budget-2023-2027 I hope someone in power has some courage and foresight to begin transitioning away from a car-centric city.

"The Albanese Government remains committed to Vision Zero — zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2050," Senator Brown said.
How long do we have to wait until they decrease the speed limit to 30km/h on residential streets? That's an important part of Vision Zero in other countries. It's useless talking about zero deaths and injuries while cars are allowed to travel at 40-50km/h on shared streets.
"Road toll rises in almost every state and territory, putting safety strategy 'badly off course'" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-05-14/road-toll-rises-in-almost-every-state-and-territory/102338652 Could this be related to the increase in SUVs, same as in the US?
Road toll rises in almost every state and territory, putting safety strategy 'badly off course'

Independent monitoring of the national road toll finds deaths on Australia's roads have risen in almost every state and territory, prompting concerns the National Road Safety Strategy is failing.

Love seeing all the family ebikes at Brunswick baths; a Tern, a RadWagon (ours), and a Yuba. Imagine how many there could be if there was a real bike path! #cargobike #ProtectedBikeLanes #BikeMelbourne #MerriBek

If you haven’t seen it before, SBSOnDemand in Australia are showing “Rare Exports”, which is, umm, a Finnish cryptozoological Santa Claus story.

“You can find us anywhere you get your podcasts.”

I *adore* this phrase, because it has been like two whole-ass decades and not one single venture capital darling has managed to unseat plain RSS as the distribution method for podcasts. Not one. (And they have really tried!)

Podcasts are just out there, like air. You don’t go to one place to get them; you get them from everywhere and anywhere. You can choose how you want to engage with them and manage them and it is legitimately heartwarming that nothing has ever gotten in the way of that being a fundamental fact.

This is the best of what the web is. It will never have a stock ticker or even a marketing scheme. Most people don’t even know it is there. But it endures (past the many, many attempts by squillionaire corporates to kill it) because of its absolute unshakable utility.

My suggestion: any time you hear “anywhere you get your podcasts”, send a little thanks to RSS for keeping the real web alive.
