I'm a blind (going deaf) amateur radio operator in New York City, licensed since 1993, primarily found on VHF/UHF and Allstarlink. I run the Allstarlink/digital bridges for www.BlindHams.com.

I'm an audio engineer by trade, which is really fun when going deaf, and enjoy playing with VoIP, Raspberry Pi projects, etc. Also pretend to be a musician sometimes.

I mostly just post amateur radio stuff here. My more general account is @BorrisInABox

I've mentioned here plenty of times that some of our local repeater IDs are a mess. Broken morse code, repeaters that just say "ID" because their Arcom RC-210 controllers haven't been programmed properly, etc. I just heard one ID as a "440 VHF repeater." Good job. Slow clap.
I'm probably just a little bit out of range to work anyone participating in Toilets on the Air from my current location, unless someone has height and line-of-sight to the Rockaways, but, eh, who knows?

I just heard someone on my Allstar parrot node coming in through a repeater. When he unkeyed, you heard a receiver's squelch tail, a hang time, another squelch tail, a beep, and then a third squelch tail.

#AST plans to launch 243 more #satellites that will transmit continuously all over the 70 cm amateur band.

The whole #amateurradio #radioamateur community is concerned all over the world!

PLEASE SEND A COMMENT TO THE #FCC before tomorrow! Tell them to forbid this madness on the #70cm #hamradio band!

Use of 430-440 MHz by AST SpaceMobile constellation

AST & Science LLC (AST SpaceMobile) currently have five Bluebird commercial satellites that use the amateur radio 430-440 MHz band. They were launched into Low Earth Orbit on September 12, 2024…

In the community I live in two of our library staff (both women) discovered amateur radio. One of the two was licensed this past spring, today she unveiled the library purchased training guides for the Technician, General and Extra exams. The library also purchased a book on indoor operating, Salty Walt’s Portable Antenna Sketchbook and the ARRL Antenna Handbook.

Our local ham radio community feels so grateful for these resources being made available to the public.

Also be kind to new folks.

I hope their cable is better than their spelling. 😬

During my activation tonight I got a park-to-park from someone activating the Bush Family Home state historic site in Texas and I'm half tempted not to log or acknowledge just on principle, half tempted to log it with flying colors because it requires a very small footprint and some effort and TBH if I were near it I'd activate it from the bathroom.

If I had known the park number off the top of my head I would have ended the QSO by saying "Mission Accomplished 73"

I'm running the All Nodes Net again at the top of the hour.
It's a net where we can geek out and get technical support with nodes of all sorts -- Allstarlink, HamVoIP, Echolink, MMDVM, etc.
If you're interested in such things, connect to Allstarlink node 51018, or Echolink W6EK-R at 9:00 PM EDT, 6:00 PM PDT, 01:00 UTC.

FreeDV is designed for use on HF, but what happens if you use it on FM with flat radios?

I'm tempted to try it with a friend about 30 miles away on 1.25m simplex just for shits and giggles.

@mcdanlj

Right. Most of the amateur DV mode MBE patents have already expired[1], and those for AMBE+2 will do so within the next few years so, yes, the driver for "not AMBE" is largely gone, and even that could have been addressed with Codec 2 on DMR.

For the M17 digital mode more broadly, I had already noticed that it was not a great deal better than other modes, and rather less capable than DMR. Naylor's comments suggest that it's materially worse.

I have never purchased anything from Palomar Engineers.

Neither would I describe myself as somebody on the left "side" of politics.

But with this, Palomar has ensured that they will not have the pleasure of my business.

@kilroy_was_here they probably think this helps with their typical customer demographic. Unfortunately we don’t have a good collective memory, otherwise so many other equipment vendors would pay the price for silly stunts like that.
@kilroy_was_here oh boy, that is flying a freak flag

@kilroy_was_here Oh god. At first glance I thought it was the worst special event call ever but oh no.

The growing gap between amateur radio ā€œnormalā€ in the US and Europe is pretty alarming. I didn’t see a single stall at Friedrichshafen selling tactical gear or combat knives or webbing or other nutty stuff, but I understand it’s par for the course at American hamfests these days. This is not normal and it’s not always been like this.

@oe1omk

I'm not much of the hamfest type, but I prefer going to the small and the tiny ones for this reason.

Those tend to be a handful of blokes selling things off at a good price. The big ones, you get the "knife and military stuff" kinds of traders and people who expect too much for their things.

Not to mention the big ones are exhausting. The small ones, you can take your time. Most of the time the coffee and water is free or you just pay a wee amount for the cup.

@oe1omk

To be clear, most of US ham radio isn't like this. It's just the loud minority that is.

@kilroy_was_here The loud majority which thinks it’s the silenced majority :)
@kilroy_was_here I don't think I've ever bought anything from them, but now they've insured that I never will.
@kilroy_was_here I set up this instance to stay away from depressing politics only to find some companies want to force it into my hobby. *sigh*

@kilroy_was_here Wonder what one of their distributors might think if they were aware of this supplier’s home page proclamation?

@kilroy_was_here well that is wild, thank you for sharing. That is disappointing as I know their equipment is highly regarded in the community.

@kilroy_was_here Not sure this is legit. None of the captures of the website on the Wayback Machine from Sep-2024 until now show any QAnon text. If I zoom into the image of the actual website and the shared image there is a big difference. I see evidence of photo editing.

I have no love for anyone who advances QAnon conspiracy theories, but I have an equal distaste for this who use deception to make their point. @orv

@jd9c5m @orv

You made me look again. I couldn't believe it. I saw it with my own eyes.

It was changed back! I swear to god that I saw exactly what the screenshot says.

Maybe they got hacked or something, I will agree that it looked like a sloppy edit.

@jd9c5m @orv

I will add that I don't like people who make rumors either.
