@idzie Some are rivers that have been dammed, as well; often to provide hydropower. Check out The Passionate Paddler's YouTube video on his canoe trip on the White River (Ontario), which was closed to paddlers for years to construct small-scale dams for the First Nations along that river.
@taylorlorenz Pretty sure part of the reason Mastodon isn't more widely-adopted is because, being non-commercial, there is no content creator program.
@Mistercaz94 The initiation of an invasion of Greenland by the Trump administration would bring a quick end to the Trump administration, with one of two outcomes. Either he would be removed from office by politicians (25th Amendment, failure to faithfully execute the law, i.e. our treaty obligations); or he would be removed from office by the population of the US.
@lethargilistic ICE isn't a law enforcement organization. There is exactly *no* justification for that ICE agent to discharge a weapon against anyone. Ms Good was not threatening anyone. They can make all the excuses about how this officer was dragged by someone fleeing in a vehicle at some point in the past, but that was not the case yesterday. If that officer is *so* emotionally disregulated that he can't tell the difference between these two situations, then he needed to retire well before yesterday's incident.
@QasimRashid This, right here, is an excellent example of why we do not trust establishment Democrats.
Every single time the establishment Dems override the will of the electorate, we get screwed. The DNC engineered HIllary as the candidate - she lost, we ended up with Trump. The DNC engineered Kamala as the candidate, she lost, we ended up with Trump.
In Buffalo, Byron Brown got primaried: instead of supporting the Dem candidate, he ran against her as an independent. Smeared the living $#!+ out of her, took money from a Trump-supporting local developer. Brown ended up winning, then quit to take a CEO-ship half way through his term at a local casino.
Now we've got another deep establishment Dem - Cuomo - losing roundly to a progressive candidate in Mamdani.
The position of the Democratic Party and the DNC *should* be to support these progressive candidates, get behind them, in order to subvert the fascists.
But, nooo....instead, the Democratic Party and the DNC are fighting *against* the voters.
How far down the fascist rabbit hole does this country need to go, before the Democrats and the DNC wake the f**k up and start listening to the voters?

The senior officer that is present tomorrow should call the room to attention when Kegsbreath enters, and issue one simple command: "About face."

@dangillmor That's, umm... *rather* problematic, on a number of levels.
...but one would expect this sort of sentiment, wouldn't one? It simply reinforces the notion that the goal of government is not simply to subordinate the agency of the individual to the agency of the State; but rather to coopt the agency of the individual, entirely.
@QasimRashid At this point, we're well beyond hope that the DNC can get their $#!+ together. Responsible progressives need to step up and take the leadership.
@w7voa Mr Dowd was not wrong, and journalists should not be fired for speaking plain truth. Mr Kirk had no problem advocating violence -- State violence -- against minorities, the marginalized, and economic immigrants. Mr Kirk advocated for State control over women's reproductive rights. Mr Kirk saw a certain level of gun violence in the civil population as an acceptable price to pay, in order to maintain 2nd Amendment freedoms.
Those who advocate for violence against others -- especially State violence -- should not be at all surprised when that same violence is visited upon themselves.
