Great article on what some people like - and don't like - horror movies.

The author proposes something called the sweet spot of fear:

"People don’t want their horror to be too scary, but they also don’t want it to be not scary enough. It has to hit their sweet spot. The thing is, people have different sweet spots. Some have a very high tolerance for fear — the thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies, for instance. Others need very little stimulation to hit their sweet spot."

--------------------------------------------------
WEREWOLF BY NIGHT

Where: Disney+
Rating: PG13

Summary: wonderful tribute to classic American horror films of the 1930s and 1940s. Some mild violence and gore, masked by B&W cinematography.
-------------------------------------------------

"Werewolf by Night" is a delightful homage to the history of the horror genre.

It is based on the original 1972, and reimagined 2020, comic of the same name.

The film takes us back to the world of 1930s and 40s horror. It's very much a tribute to the serial and B-movie films of the era.

Shot almost exclusively in black and white, the film deploys the same art style and deep shadows of James Whales Frankenstein and other RKO classics.

The eponymous werewolf is - aesthetically - a throwback to the Lon Chaney's original wolfman.

I also adore the character of "Ted".

I grew up watching the old Abbot and Costello monster films so this perfectly hit the nostalgia spot.

Great for a lazy Sunday afternoon - uncomplicated, cheesy fun for fans of the genre.

Rating: 4 out of 5 full moons.

Wonderful Gothic inspired building in the heart of Melbourne CBD.

Legit vampire liar or Adams family vacation home.

I've actually spent time in the building, knowing an artist whose studio was on the top floor.

Would dearly love a studio apartment in this.

Film: The Sadness
Where: Shudder
Content warning: extreme violence and gore
Thoughts: Mix of classic horror flick "28 Days Later" and comic "Crossed"; rejection of elevated horror taking the genre back to 70's exploitation flicks
---------------------------------------------------

Let's talk "The Sadness, the Taiwanese body horror film written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Rob Jabbaz.

I'm going to include in "the best" horror of 2022 even though, personally, I didn't love the film.

It's an accomplished directorial debut and signals the arrival of an interesting creator.

However it's not a film for the sensitive or squeamish: there are some pretty extreme set pieces of gore and violence (some of it sexual).

It falls into the "fast running" Zombie genre very much reminiscent of "28 days later". No explanation for the infestation is offered, except it's blood born and quickly transforms a person in to a rage filled killer. It explores the same themes of rage and male violence. Also clear references to the comic "Crossed".

Whereas "28 days later" is a tour-de-force in story telling, "The Sadness" is a loose narrative connecting different episodes of blood soaked violence.

The film eschews story and meaning for nihilism and practical effects.

In this way I see "The Sadness" as a rejection of "elevated" horror.

3.5 Fast Zombies out of 5.

Film: Deadstream

Genre: Found footage - Horror comedy

So I won't be doing a ranked list, but highlighting some of the films, series and other media of the horror genre I've enjoyed.

Feel free to share you're own favourites - I'm always keen to learn from other horror aficionados.

First up "Deadstream" - a contemporary take on the found footage film.

A disgraced internet prankster livestreams himself at an abandoned haunted house. He unleashes a vengeful spirit which results in some wonderful scares and slapstick humour reminiscent of Sam Raimi.

Think Blair Witch-meets-Evil Dead meets-Host. Good fun and some genuinely good jump scares. Some mild gross out horror.

Oh and take the time to read the audience comments during the protagonists livestream - perfectly reflects the online world.

Rating: 4 out of 5 jump scares.

HORROR: A WOUNDED FAWN
------------------------------------------------

One of my favourite horror films of 2022 has to be "A wounded fawn" currently streaming on Shudder.

It's an intelligent, and at times brutal, exploration of male violence.

Exploring themes of #art #mythology and the #feminine it's worth a watch for those who enjoy - ahem - "elevated" horror.

70s inspired cinematography, the film is easily carried by the performance of the two lead actors.

Well worth it.

4.5 out of 5 Hecates.
