I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?

Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.

Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.

Leavitt’s work is still used today. Next time you hear about famous men in #science share her story. #HistoryRemix

@lianmakesthings nothing like losing 4B in cap value in less than a day to force a change in policy
@psr not one of ours…. The librarians were great. I would work the phones after a release. They were so nice and polite on the phone
@psr that’s great story. As employees, we could take as many mags as we wanted. Fun Fact: computer shopper had the highest revenue per page in publishing. If I remember correctly it was 100k per page.. and it was one heavy magazine. Robert Ziff treated us well. When he retired, the reigns went to his sons. They in turn sold the company. It was sold in blocks, so magazines went one way, online another.
@psr we were all under one umbrella back then. Ziff Davis owned PC magazines and a bunch of others. So we had all the content. At one point we were trying to become the next America online dedicated to authors. My group was responsible for Computer online. We provided all the articles on CD and sold them to libraries. It was expensive. We also sold CDs of printer on network drivers and called that one support on site…. It was a great company to work for.
@annettekapple she’s amazing and great with an audience
@levlaz good to be here
