*Uses multimeter to verify which pin is 5V on 3D printer control board*

0V? Okay, let's try the other possibility. 0V again?

* tries pin known to be 5V. 0V?! Did the 5V regulator on the control board break? I didn't see any magic smoke.

*Tests 1.5V battery*

0V again, my multimeter is broken!?

*Panics internally*

*Looks at multimeter closely*

Squiggly line next to the V ... oh, it was set to measure AC voltage.

Except, now we're a layer deeper to where we're not just playing Yard Work Simulator, we're buying the DLC for Yard Work Simulator. And it's a movie tie-in with a franchise from decades ago. To make the equivalent joke would have been to advertise an expansion "Yard Work Simulator: The Magnificent Seven"
This is what we used to make jokes about. Now it's just ... what game companies do and are proud that they do.
I think the video game industry went well past the point of parody sometime a while back. How do you even joke about something when this is just the straight facts about what they're putting out? Uh ... good job Squeenix and Universal Studios.
Out of curiosity I looked up the company that parents of a college friend operated. The first thing that came up was a court case in 2019 for them stiffing a political mailing business around $300k, but it was dismissed. I migrated some WordPress installs for them a few years before that. After seeing the content of the migrated sites I decided to not do anything further for them, which evidently was a good call. Of course now in 2023 their website just gives a 503 error.
The thing about corporate software is that you have to give two weeks notice to quit while the software often quits unexpectedly. #ThisWasFunnierInMyHead
Absolutely fucked that sustenance is tied to finance.
What happened to Electron apps being bad? There was a lot of griping about it for a while that I remember, but now it seems like people accepted that desktop applications are web pages with icons that are slow to start and hog memory.
The idea with gift economies is that they rely upon trust, but can't scale past a certain number of people. However, I'm not sure that this is necessarily true. Societies have traditions around hospitality that seems to extend that gift economy to strangers and foreigners by setting rules for doing so and setting up doing so as a moral obligation.
