Despite the GOP's lies, Social Security is fully funded until 2035. The easy way to ensure future funding is to end the SS tax phase out at $160k meaning people pay SS tax on ALL income. But GOP will never agree to that bc it means their wealthy donors have to pay more taxes.

@mekkaokereke You're almost right, it has nothing to do with Obama and preceded him by decades.

But anti-blackness IS the reason most social benefits from schools to healthcare to welfare have been under attack ( through Rethug and Dem admins) for 50+ years.

The reason any social issues is either funded or under constant attack is that the majority of White people think Black people will benefit ( usually at their expense). But just Black people getting a benefit is enough.

If someone tells you there's nothing we can do about gun violence beyond thoughts and prayers, remind them:

— Gun laws in other countries have stopped mass shootings

— More guns don't make us safer

— The vast majority of Americans want gun control

Inaction is a policy choice.

It will never not be weird to me that driving up unemployment is seen as a completely acceptable way to control inflation.

It will never not be weird to me that wages growing faster than inflation is seen as a dangerous crisis requiring immediate intervention.

It will never not be weird to me that nurse wages rising fast due to a nursing shortage, prompts the government to consider capping nurse wages, but not to consider immigration changes, or making more nurses, or letting wages rise.

It's time for Merrick Garland to Resign. As I explained on MSNBC to Mehdi Hassan, Merrick Garland’s failure to charge Donald Trump over two years after his attempted coup and Jan 6 terrorist attack is sending a message to our fellow Americans that what Trump did was not that serious. It was. In fact, it was akin to TREASON. Trump waged an attack on democracy. He should have been charged by now. https://open.substack.com/pub/deanobeidallah/p/its-time-for-merrick-garland-to-resign?r=17xyj&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

The Dean's Report by Dean Obeidallah
If the left set the agenda for news--as is often the accusation--then my first 90 minutes this morning would be filled with discussion of climate, the recovering economy, the need to defeat Putin, and--I wish--the need for continued vigilance against the pandemic.

Some #thoughts on #Mastodon vs other platforms:

- The pace is slower, in a good way. Slow down, write longer messages, think about your replies.

- #HotTakes generally can't or won't go viral in the same way. I still like seeing them, but temper your pavlovian expectations.

- I like seeing your boots but I also like seeing your original thoughts. Aim for a balance.

- I doubt this will ever become the outrage engine you're used to. Don't expect to find that here.

It's now TWO YEARS and 7 days since Donald Trump's Jan 6 terrorist attack. Not only has Trump not been charged with even one crime, he's now running for President where he's actively spewing more lies to delegitimize our democracy. Long past Time to INDICT TRUMP!
@JBoeckli you do you. Until you can't.
Hope political Matson is still around to help you then
@cadenza @QasimRashid never said there shouldn't be consequences for harassment. I said there is no advantage to conflating violence and harm.
