@amy Another thing to note on the ancient woods - just with my conservation hat on - is that about half of our ancient woods are in a poor state of health, or have been turned into plantations (often called PAWS, planted ancient woodland site). The restoration of a PAWS can take upwards of 100 years to do carefully to ensure the site maintains its ancient woodland status - i.e. continuous woodland coverage since 1600 in England/Wales & since 1750 in Scotland - when the maps were reliable enough.
