Today on Techdirt I wrote about two newly proposed state laws, one from the Texas GOP and one from the Florida GOP, both of which are blatantly, laughably unconstitutional attacks on free speech and the first amendment in pursuit of culture war nonsense. But never let the GOP claim that they support the 1st Amendment when they constantly pull shit like this.

Another Day, Another Blatant Attack On The 1st Amendment From The Florida GOP

I keep hearing people pretend that the GOP in general, and Florida GOPers more specifically, and Governor Ron DeSantis most specifically, are fighting for “free speech,” when they conti…

‘The most common response I get when I talk about dark matter is: “isn’t this just something physicists made up to make the math work out?”
The answer to that might surprise you: yes! In fact, everything in physics is made up to make the math work out.’

My latest for BBC Science Focus:

Yes, everything in physics is completely made up – that’s the whole point

A physicist's task is to constantly create equations that keep up with our observations of physical phenomena.

Regarding Efforts By You, In Inferior Person, To Cancel Me, A Genius

As you know, I recently said something incendiary and provocative, and you reacted, as did many people like you.

The Dilbert guy hasn't exactly kept his white nationalism a secret, but he finally came out and called for the resegregation of the U.S., and in response *hundreds* of newspapers cancelled his garbage comic strip this weekend. He believes that zero newspapers will carry his strip by Monday. I hope he's right. https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2023/02/25/scott-adams-dilbert-canceled/
‘Dilbert’ dropped by The Post, other papers, after cartoonist’s racist rant

The Washington Post joined many newspapers that will drop the long-running 'Dilbert' comic strip after its creator called Black Americans a 'hate group.'

I am NOT saying journalism should leave Twitter this minute (though that would be gratifying).

I am saying news orgs and journalists should announce their intention to do so, and move expeditiously to places like this.

See my recent TechDirt post for the why, and how: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/01/04/journalists-and-others-should-leave-twitter-heres-how-they-can-get-started/

Journalists (And Others) Should Leave Twitter. Here’s How They Can Get Started

Summary: Elon Musk has demonstrated contempt for free speech in general, and journalism in particular, with his behavior at Twitter. He is also demonstrating why it is foolhardy for anyone to rely …

Lol: "Twitter's front-end department didn't pay Twitter's back-end department for API access....."

From a friend who didn't want to post it themselves, but said I could. Too funny not to share...

Such BS, do not fall for this. The fact that he can change the rules on a whim is enough of a reason to continue with your plans to migrate your bots away from Twitter's unstable platform.

https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/04/elon-musk-says-twitter-will-provide-a-free-write-only-api-to-bots-providing-good-content/

Probably best to just turn your bots off and not let this guy decide their fate.

Not going to lie, Twitter killing off free API access hits me in the feels. I remember with great affection the flood of creativity that happened after we opened up the API, and it's heartbreaking to see that unceremoniously strangled.

I'm relieved that we've got better alternatives, though. While this is perhaps the final straw for many bots on Twitter, it's been a long time coming and the API has long been hobbled compared to the early days. Open protocols or bust. ✊

Knowing next to nothing about the Mastodon API, I was able to write a command-line tooting shell script in an hour or so yesterday morning. I see a lot of former Twitter bots popping up on Mastodon. Could it be that having an API that is simple and easy to use encourages developers to use it, adding value and attracting more users? 🤔
