Such BS, do not fall for this. The fact that he can change the rules on a whim is enough of a reason to continue with your plans to migrate your bots away from Twitter's unstable platform.

https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/04/elon-musk-says-twitter-will-provide-a-free-write-only-api-to-bots-providing-good-content/

Probably best to just turn your bots off and not let this guy decide their fate.

What does write-only even mean? Your bot can tweet, but not respond to other people?
@botwiki Weirdly, he seems to have only realised what sort of thing non-spam bots are doing via this specific account, which would only require write-only ability. Utterly clueless.
@botwiki or not aggregate any data at all is what I'm thinking
@botwiki I think it's about apps like ThreadReader or whatever — bots which respond to a request and then archive/reformat Twitter content on another platform.

@negative12dollarbill This points to a larger problem. He announces huge changes to the platform without thinking them through. And sometimes just backtracks, if there's enough pushback.

Honestly, Twitter as a platform is dead. You just don't know what to expect anymore. Why waste time building on something this unstable.

@botwiki Absolutely agree, no question. I was just trying to parse why he would say “write only” was OK.

He’s probably not mad at RacoonsEveryHour or the Weekend one. But he probably lost his mind when he finally learned about ThreadReader.

@botwiki @negative12dollarbill if I were a large content creator I’d build/engage here and cross post there. Not the other way around
@robinbrenizer @botwiki @negative12dollarbill post here and cross post there, *with a footnote on every one* of those cross posted “tweets” that the cross posting is a limited time service, tweeted replies will not be read, and come find the real discussion on Mastodon.
@botwiki It means he doesn't know anything. Since this will still enable bots posting spam.
@TheChrisGlass @botwiki he needs the engagement is my guess
@robinbrenizer @botwiki well, if he's not doing it yet, I imagine those numbers will be inflated with fake views soon enough
@botwiki The doofus thinks he’s being smart and will allow content that comes INTO Twitter, but not allow content to leave Twitter, in order to disrupt migration-enablers such as tweets.icu, movetodon and similar. The doofus thinks it’s all about dictating what others can do, and gives no thought to the fact that the trust and reputation of his ShiteBird site is approaching 0 and in the end nothing will prevent the inevitable cratering of his ShiteSite.

@botwiki it means your bot can’t read existing content on Twitter, which would be useful for exporting your data to another service (read: Mastodon), and for scanning user’s bios/tweets for things like, say, Mastodon forwarding addresses people post as they leave Twitter.

He’s trying desperately to close the barn doors, after the horses are already out, and because he can’t help being himself, he’s “graciously” allowing people to continue doing bot things if they’re totally beneficial _to him_.

@botwiki it can't read data...like profile info looking for mastodon references.

It is all about making migration away hard.

@botwiki I thought I was the only person who didn't understand his BS!
@Agora @botwiki Don't let his fanboys fool you by amount of people just thinks the way he running Twitter is not only terrible but also hypocritical with him wanting 'free speech' back 🙄
@botwiki Actually Verified??? Is that for real?

@botwiki Excellent. The first part of my prediction has come true and Musky realized he cut off good users and would carve out exceptions.

Now I'm just waiting for the next part when he learns how complicated his carve outs are and undoes it in a fit of rage, sending even more people to flee the site.

You can count on this doofus learning his mistakes publicly in real time. Smart people learn from other people's mistakes.

@botwiki @fuzzychef what does he consider “good content”?
@botwiki @mikec415 @fuzzychef i came here looking for this question. And looks like we don’t have any answers
@botwiki I thought he was going to get rid of bots 😂
@botwiki I used to think musk was cool. I am sad that the person I used to adore never actually existed. This is a recurrent theme in life it seems.
@meowdude Yeah, he really got many of us with his "I'm giving up my patents so that more companies can make electric cars" years ago. I'm actually really glad that he goes out of his way to show everyone who he really is nowadays.
@botwiki @meowdude I remember thinking it was cool that he was "going to allow other EVs to use Tesla's tech" ... it wasn't until much later that I found out the crazy riders on usage that made it a no-go. I still have to explain that to people when it comes up, which says a lot about the marketing strength, at least...
@Lothus @botwiki I have read that he is responsible for the mainstream commoditization of EVs. Afaik, Tesla was shooting for EVs anyone could afford. Still waiting for that electric "used camry."
@meowdude @botwiki Sorta? I'll give him credit in that his marketing made huge strides in making electric cars "cool," which helped get the bigger players to move more seriously. He also landed at just the right time when lithium batteries were suddenly making the capacity potential to make them worthwhile for larger distances. Electric cars have been around forever, but never mainstream in large part because available battery tech was too heavy for the capacity.
@botwiki Pretty obviously it is not worth putting time and effort into one man's capricious mania for money.

@botwiki If it were me, with the billions of dollars of interest payments, I'd make it as easy as possible to pump content into my platform.

But, hey, I'm just an idiot unbillionaire consumer.
