Tim_Wildschut, Constantin Sedikides & I 1st developed a 🇩🇪 classifier to detect #nostalgia appeals using a psychologically-grounded approach and 2nd applied this classifier to the FB-posts of all big 🇩🇪 parties in 2019. Results show (a) psych matters & (b) populists know about the value of nostalgia=> Democratic memories are needed! We hope you like it!

Digital Memory and Populism| Populists’ Use of Nostalgia: A Supervised Machine Learning Approach

Starting from next Monday, accessing Twitter for academic purposes will incur a fee. Expressing dissatisfaction will not yield any results. Our only recourse is to render the platform irrelevant by ceasing to utilize it.

Brookings Institution study:

"Conservative podcasters were 11 times as likely as liberal podcasters to share a claim that fact checkers could refute."

To erase this kind of finding, you have to declare "there are no facts, really, just politics." But then there is no journalism, either. Which is exactly where the right wing has gone: disinformation is a myth.

"Mr. Bannon said in an interview that the Brookings report was a 'badge of honor'..."

New paper!

Some are concerned that news media unintentionally make misinformation worse by repeating false claims while reporting on them, or as part of debunking, fact-checking, etc.

However, across 🇧🇷 🇮🇳 🇬🇧 our panel survey found that news use increased people's awareness of false claims without increasing their belief in them.

In some cases news media use even weakened false belief acquisition.

I don’t want to jump the gun, but this is overkill. Maybe you should take a stab at the zillion real problems in the world like structural racism and climate change instead of handwringing over people saying “shoot me an email.” Not to beat it to death but this is a…

Dangerous Speech: A Practical Guide - Dangerous Speech Project

This guide - updated for 2019 - provides an in-depth exploration of dangerous speech and how to identify it, dangerous speech on the internet, and some promising efforts to reduce the harmful effects of speech.

It's possible, depending on pricing for academic access (which I haven't seen) that our team will be able to continue, to a much smaller extent, to conduct research on Twitter. However, the under-resourced PhD student won't have a chance to work in this environment. As a wide-eyed PhD student on a "crisis informatics" team, in the wake of the Haiti Earthquake, I built an infrastructure to support crisis mapping during disaster events. That kind of emergent "action research" won't be possible.
