I really think the only reasonable response to the increasing prevalence of 996 in the tech world is to organize for a 20 hour workweek with no reduction in pay. They are trying to move the Overton window for working hours; let’s drag it the fuck back.
@winterknight1337 Congrats on all points!
Do It Yourself-Care: Self-Care During Heat Waves: free pdf mini-zine available in my webshop: https://ko-fi.com/s/df0e904125 You can download and print it yourself.

This mini-zine has tips to help cope with heatwaves. They're little things you can do, it won't stop climate change unfortunately, but hopefully there's something useful for anyone struggling anyway. I made the zine some years ago during a very heavy heatwave and I'm currently experiencing the worst heatwave ever where I live.

@beccadax @slava Oh boy, I’m sorry. I haven’t been in the payments industry for a bit, but depressing to hear those sorts of issues are STILL happening. Particularly with no decent error messages.
@beccadax @slava I saw this and had to laugh because years ago I helped troubleshoot a problem with card transactions breaking at a credit union and it turned out to be a “typographic apostrophe” being sent in a merchant name. Non-ASCII character and some old systems really couldn’t deal with it. We were on the processor side of this in the transaction chain and when we figured out what was going on, we were left to wonder how many (what we thought were) ‘simple declines’ were actually punctuation and accent marks in cardholder and merchant names over the years. To make it more convoluted, we weren’t even the party putting the merchant name in the message, it was done by someone upstream of us.

Sewing friends, Costco is selling the Singer Heavy Duty machine for $179.99, which is a great price. This is a really nice general purpose machine for starting your sewing hobby! It'll make crafts, clothes, bags, quilts, it's a good little tank.

- It can easily handle things like denim or canvas, two fabrics a lot of beginning sewists using for things like bags and totes

- It has a strong motor and with regular maintenance will last a long time (I wish I'd kept mine!)

- Specialty presser feet can be a hidden expense with sewing, sometimes they're hard to find in different brands (my Bernina's feet are hard to locate). But Singer's feet are generic and you can get variety packs for $20, very nice!

@JessTheUnstill I’m glad it proved not to be worrying! But yeah, people need to be cognizant (more than ever!) that folks are on edge and not add unnecessary alarm to how they schedule things.

I still remember my first full time job and my boss abruptly pulling me into a dark unused office…to tell me I was getting a raise! I was glad for the raise but prior to the actual news, I was SO nervous.

Need a road fixed or a bridge built in your town? How about funding for a rural hospital? Then you need to know that one man, Russell Vought, is about to have complete control over who gets federal funding and who doesn’t. To learn more and to write your elected representatives, hit this link.

Oppose OMB Proposal to Put ALL...
Oppose OMB Proposal to Put ALL Federal Government Grant Decisions in the Hands of Political Appointees | Defend Public Health

On May 29, 2026, the Office of Management and Budget issued a proposed new rule for federal grants with breathtaking scope, impacting every grant issued across every department and agency of the federal government, including Health and Human Services. It would politicize the awarding and continuation of grants and regulate the non-grant activities of those receiving federal funds. This proposed rule would undermine congressional authority, cause chaos for private institutions and state and local governments that receive federal funds, and effectively codify Trump administration executive orders attacking transgender people and DEI. We've launched an urgent campaign to stop this terrible rule. Please join the effort now!

This article features some US bookstores that still have masking policies: if you are blessed with a book budget please consider supporting indie stores that still mask, and drop them in the comments.

Indie Bookstores with Masking & Covid Policies in 2026

The trajectory of Covid awareness may not go exactly as many expect, and in the meantime, bookstores are one of the community spaces that can offer a transition point to a different possible future.

On the train and four older (60+) people are having a nice little grumble about how annoying it is that there's always AI at the top of search results and it's usually wrong.

Just in case you were worried that only young people hate this crap.
