I'm an English Professor at a university in the South and a part-time Californian.
I graded half the essays yesterday, and I thought I told Canvas to withhold the scores, and well ooops.

I had the honor of delivering the Brandie Siegfried memorial lecture at BYU yesterday. I took the opportunity to reread much of Brandie's scholarship and think about how her work influenced mine. It was a beautiful way to remember her.

Rock paper scissors.

Fine. I'll be House Speaker.
Next week is the big MLA convention for literature, narrative, and language scholars (#MLA23). Since 2010 maybe, Twitter has played an important role for the conference backchannel. I'm wondering this year how big a role the fediverse will play. Can we challenge ourselves to make good use of Mastodon? I can see CWs/subject headers and extended length posts being useful. And of course hashtags...

This is the ceo of openai saying that for chatgpt "the compute costs are eye-watering" ... meaning that not only is it economically unsustainable, it is using a lot of electricity, and likely physical server space, etc.

When I posted before that the current brand of ML is "anti-life" this is part of what I was thinking about. They believe that "AI" is so important that it is worth burning the world. Literally covering the earth in server farms if it helps make "AGI" happen.

I think I finished an overdue article today! I got way overextended on articles and chapters I agreed to write (on top of the book), and I've been digging myself out for years. I'd built up the article I finished today as harder and more complicated than it actually was, but I did the research during the semester and managed to write it the few days between the last day of class and finals coming in.
You guys! I packed a lunch this morning and forgot it at home. It has a peanut butter sandwich, three small oranges, cheese cubes, and pistachios. 😭
