A new immunotherapy is showing rare promise against advanced prostate cancer, a disease long thought resistant to this kind of treatment. In an early trial of 58 men whose cancer no longer responded to standard care, 88% had only mild side effects; and five of 11 men with measurable tumours saw them shrink. The drug is designed to activate only inside the tumour, which may both reduce dangerous inflammation and require fewer doses. Researchers praise ‘stunning’ results of new prostate cancer treatment
Early trials of the drug VIR-5500 showed it shrinking tumours in some patients
Scientists in California have created a new way to see inside the body by combining ultrasound with a light-based technique called photoacoustic imaging. The result produces fast 3D images that show both the shape of soft tissues and how blood is flowing. It has already been tested on human heads, breasts and limbs, and could help doctors spot tumours, track nerve damage from diabetes and study the brain — without radiation or injected dyes. Bringing Optical Color to Ultrasound
By combining two imaging techniques, Lihong Wang and his colleagues have developed a tool that can image blood vessels, in color, while still being able to clearly detect tissue morphology
Our friend the Udzungwa Glandular Tree Toad was first described as a new species just a few months ago! Like other toads in genus Nectophrynoides, they do not lay eggs and instead give birth to fully developed toadlets! (photo by John Lyakurwa)
