#Genealogy If you're looking for US ancestors from 19th century & early 20th century, bookmark Linda Stufflebean's links to digitized county histories available for #free! Often I find ancestor bios & #FamilyHistory in these county histories (not necessarily accurate but good clues)! https://emptybranchesonthefamilytree.com/county-histories/
Notable that Marc Andreessen backed Elon’s Twitter takeover and is now also backing Post.news, Twitter’s main competitor outside Mastodon. Once again, you think you’re given a choice but the rich get richer either path you take!

“To the extent that people remain active on Twitter, they preserve the viability of Musk’s gambit. The illusory sense of community that still lingers on the platform is one of Musk’s most significant assets. No matter which side prevails, the true victor in any war is the person selling weapons to both sides.”

Why I Quit Elon Musk’s Twitter

Jelani Cobb writes about his recent decision to quit Elon Musk’s Twitter, a social-media platform that once represented the new frontier of digital democracy.

To ensure cars didn’t take back control of #Paris streets as the pandemic was “ending” (no, it hasn’t ended), like they have in so many cities, Mayor #AnneHidalgo made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed into seating for restaurants, people places and bike-lanes.

Today is the start of #NationalTreeWeek in the UK.

It’s the start of the planting season, which is from the end of November until March.

#trees planting is frowned on by some who favour only natural regeneration, but there’s a place for both if planting is done to complement & reconnect smaller fragments of ancient #woodland on a landscape scale.

It can have a massive positive impact on biodiversity as seen at Heartwood #Forest in St Albans.

Here’s an image from there.

I've seen plenty of discussions in recent days over the network structure of Mastodon and whether it can remain decentralized as large commercial players begin taking an interest in the fediverse. I am neither an engineer nor an economist, but I do research the way media and information get distributed and I have some thoughts on this. A thread…

I wrote a bit about Greg Louganis, the legendary diver whom my adoptive parents extolled as a role model of the Adoptee Who Thrived. I resented that. But then, last night, I learned more about him.

Beautiful Man

I picture my relationship to my childhood memories as something like the view, from an airplane at 30,000 feet, of cloud cover far below. Most of the landscape is hidden behind a gray blankness, save what I can glimpse through the occasional hole. Last night I caught such a glimpse when I suddenly remembered that Greg Louganis, decorated Olympic diver and household name in 1980s USA, was adopted as an infant, and that my adoptive parents extolled him as a role model for me. I Googled his name and found

This Is Not A Legal Record
Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

Although iOS is slightly more popular in the US than Android, worldwide Android dominates. Yet app developers tend to focus too much on iOS.

"As of August, Android held 71.54% of mobile global market share, while Apple's iOS came in at 27.81%..."
