Broke a POTA dry spell yesterday with a CW activation at K-2198, Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah GA. Amazing condx on 20m! Lots of DX; England, Belgium, Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, and short skip as close in as South Carolina.
Almost didn’t bother with 40m, but glad I did. Made contact with NN4CW; only 13 miles away. He wrote me after to say that he’s been off the air for 15 years and has just gotten back on in the last week! He was only running 2.8 watts on his end!
Fun with 2m simplex mobile! Longest contact I’ve had so far; 81 miles. I almost fell into the “it’s not active so why bother?” trap. If we all do that, it never will be.
Turns out there’s a fair amount of activity here, including 2 weekly simplex nets. Met a bunch of cool folks I wouldn’t have otherwise. Kind of wild as I’m rural.
Also good to create activity for new Technicians. They’re prob 70% of my contacts.
Got a 2m CW contact coming up. That will be really cool!
Been on HF for 2.5 years, but never made a 2m or repeater contact. There’s a group out there pushing to increase 2m simplex activity. I spend 20 hours a week in the car, so I figured what the hell. Got a 2m magmount and threw the POTA rig in the car. 6 simplex contacts in 2 days.
Oddly enough, they’ve all been rural. Zero responses atop parking garages in major cities.
Personal best today - 40 miles. LOS was there, but splat maps don’t make sense. Maybe I’m doing them wrong.
