@ethanschoonover I don't know though. We live _way_ out in the country. DSL was only barely viable here at the time. I paid $100 per line for two, 3Mb, DSL lines into our house. Starlink is a lifesaver for us (can now work from home), and a lot cheaper than what we had. That being said, fiber is slowly migrating around us, when it gets here I'll drop Starlink like a hot potato.
@fesix Contrats!!
@teajaygrey @stefano By using SSH we're obviously all hackers intent only on dubious endeavors. One place I moonlight on weekends is set up like that. It drives me nuts that I can't kill some spare time by checking on my servers.
@bitsplusatoms Technician's exam doesn't take much time to study for. It's pretty common sense questions. There are a few guides online that make it easy. You can do it with a couple of evening sessions. Schedule your testing (or find out when it's available) and you can knock it out quickly. General is not much harder, but will take some actual study.
After you get into ham radio, you stop looking at touristy things and start looking at the antennas on top!
@boda Yep, it's whatever the 'changing' fee is, that sounds right. Just have the request ready to fill out then go for it when one comes available or you find one that means something to you. Here's the rules for picking something appropriate for your class:: https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-divisions/mobility-division/amateur-radio-service/amateur-call-sign-systems .
Amateur Call Sign Systems

About A unique call sign is assigned to each amateur station during the processing of its license applications. Each new call sign is assigned sequentially using the sequential call sign system, which is based on the alphabetized regional-group list for the licensee's operator class and mailing address. The station is reassigned its same call sign upon renewal or modification of its license, unless the licensee applies for a change to a new sequentially assigned or vanity call sign on FCC Form 605.

@boda Congrats!! Yes, heh, that is a mouthful. My first was as well, KI5JIV. If you're so inclined, keep your eye on https://www.radioqth.net/vanity/available and pounce on one you like. Get on the air!
RadioQTH - Available Calls

@justine I'm pretty sure you're going to need a wifi dongle so be ready. I think I had it on my P14s in the past and needed one. I currently have #FreeBSD on an L14s and must have a wifi dongle as FreeBSD will not work with the stock internal wifi chipset. Hopefully FreeBSD's new push to more laptop driver availability will improve that!

Jeff Geerling - Virtual Ostomy 5k - Worldwide

Welcome to my fundraising page! In 2018, my colon went thermonuclear. Crohn's Disease had taken its toll, and rather than spend the majority of my life tired and in the bathroom for hours every day, I had a proctocolectomy. In the years since, the UOAA has been a godsend, helping me learn how to life a full and even better life with an ostomy. And I want to pay it forward. Donating to the UOAA directly helps other people who were in my situation, or people who didn't even choose when to have their surgery (it is often done in emergencies or as a cure for colon cancer). Please donate today, to help the UOAA in its mission to help others. On October 5, 2024, I will participate in the Virtual Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k. Donated funds will support United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that makes a difference in the lives of the 725,000 to 1 million Americans who have had ostomy or continent diversion surgery. These surgeries are lifesaving and have allowed many people to return to living a healthy life. I am writing to share my story, and to ask you to support me as I train to participate in this 5k race. To find out more about the Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k please visit www.ostomy.org/5k, and to learn more about UOAA please visit www.ostomy.org. I have set my fundraising goal at $500. You can help me achieve this goal and help me pay tribute to those who need our help. Please support my fundraising campaign by clicking the donate link to sponsor my efforts in meeting my fundraising goal, or click Register to join me! Sincerely,Jeff Geerling

@qrper Nice activation and thanks for the video! About the X6200, I glitched my firmware update with a faulty power cable and _bricked_ my X6200 (!). Xiegu was very understanding and fixed/swapped it out without any hassle. Props to Xiegu. Thanks again for the video!
