Since it’s teaching eval season again, just a reminder that numerous studies have shown that these evals measure bias, not teaching effectiveness. Their use in for anything beyond feedback directly to the prof—ie tenure & promotion—is legally dubious, professionally irresponsible, and ethically wrong.

So, read yours with a glass of wine and a whole shaker of salt. Solidarity to all the women out there who get comments on being motherly or mean, well-dressed or unattractive, too challenging or a push-over.

I feel like maybe there's distinct classes for, like, communicating law to clients vs. journalistic legal writing.

In my experience all the legal memo writing stuff I learned in law school has been only intermittently relevant but "how to write an email advising a client" or "how to write an email a busy partner can skim and advise a client from their phone" is a skill I use daily.

The last Mothers Day that I saw mom alive was 50 years ago. She was in the hospital ER, we saw her from outside in the parking lot through the window of the room a few floors above. She died a few weeks later. I was 12, the oldest of 5 siblings. Life changed dramatically after that.
I don’t spend much time thinking about my feelings, how I dealt with it, or whether any of this is a healthy mental effort. But seeing all the pictures and memories shared by others today made me think that there might be some benefit to be gained in understanding more.

I've been kicking around pitching an idea for a course, tentatively titled “Introduction to Legal Writing for Public Consumption."

I'd like to marshal the fedihive mind and borrow the brains of folks much smarter and more experience than I -- does that sound like a law school course, or a journalism school course?

My experience of law school was that sort of writing wasn't even considered. Does that make this idea a feature or a bug?

Congestion Pricing Is Class Warfare. Here’s a Better Idea

Plans are afoot to charge drivers to enter Manhattan. But we need a fairer way to reduce traffic. [I published this opinion piece in the ill-fated OZY in 2019. As the OZY website appears to be gone…

What am I missing?

#NYC #congestionpricing may actually happen. Ridiculous.

It's incredibly unfair.

I already live in #Manhattan outside the designated area. So I *wouldn't* be too impacted?

But having lived in other boroughs -in some areas that were transit deserts-congestion pricing will greatly impact underserved and low-income communities.

This is 100% a #tax in disguise.

Don't talk to me about London,Singapore or the environment. Until NYC can get its mass transit accessible to all, this is premature.
