My name is Julie. I am in my 50s. Some of my interests include music, cooking, reading--Star Trek and Harry Potter have been my go-tos lately but I like other things too--and learning new things about technology.
@SeveraSnape @ppatel I can also vouch for that Sleepytime tea. It's pretty good.
@ppatel they were talking about the cookie app in another newsletter I receive. It sounds like it has some neat features, especially with it being able to talk you through steps of a recipe without having to touch your phone. If you try it, please share what you think of it.
@ppatel the other unfortunate part about using busy as a status word is that some of the guide dog schools use that word to signal to the dog that they need to start going to the bathroom. For example, someone could tell the dog something like go busy, and the dog would know to start to take care of its business. If that change was made on NVDA's side, you'd think that maybe someone might've thought that wording through a little better.
@EJGilbert doing much better. For sure a relief to see that.
@startrek2025 @JamminJerry I had another person I used to talk to occasionally who also felt that Dumbledore was manipulative. I didn't take him that way, in fact I liked his character a lot, but I could see where other people could feel that he was. That other side of him comes out a little bit in book 6, the half-blood Prince, and a lot in the Deathly Hallows, the last book in the series.
@Pool I'm really not sure how things worked with the volunteer side of the program. Our agency for the blind had some social workers who ran a program that would try to connect clients with volunteers who lived in a similar geographic area. I don't know if there was any screening done on the volunteers background, but come to think of it, I don't know that there was any screening done on the clients background either, other than that they knew people who used the services were clients, and were blind or low vision. I know the volunteers had to keep records of mileage they used while having a clients in their vehicle. I suspect also that at the time they provided help with medical transportation getting someone to and from a doctors appointment, there was probably some other insurance they had to have because the state said you had to have it. Those services are no longer being offered but I can tell you from the couple of times I used them that some went really well and some didn't depending on the people involved.
@Pool I can't speak for everywhere, but I know at least in my city, we've had some programs where you could get a volunteer driver to take you to medical appointments, food shopping, or things like that. My results using those types of services have been mixed. I remember an incident where I was matched up to work with a volunteer shopper, and I just got a really bad feeling about her. I felt like she was trying to take advantage of me. She wanted to have me give her money in advance, do the shopping when it was convenient for her, and then just have me pay her the rest of whatever I owed when she got back. She really flipped an attitude when I asked her about going through receipts. Another volunteer shopper used to make a thing of trying to make substitutions of things I would ask for, either because they were cheaper or healthier. She would do this without telling me. On the other hand, I remember another time having to have a ride home after surgery, and the person who I got matched with to provide the ride was fantastic. I'd had to fast the day before the procedure. The driver was willing to let me stop off and pick up something to eat so that I didn't have to make anything when I came home. I really really appreciated that.

When I was buying groceries the other day, I noticed that the cashier reminded me of an online friend I have known for years. And I got to thinking, what if my friend worked as a cashier at a grocery store? Customers would then see her, watch her scan items and pack them dutifully, hear her small pleasantries as they paid, and then leave and think no more about her. Nothing in that transaction would give them the slightest clue about her boundless creativity, her rich mind, her deep heart, all of which I have grown to admire and love. They would have no idea what an amazing person she is.

And then I wondered if perhaps my cashier today was in fact an amazing person and I simply had no idea. And now I am contemplating the notion that every person we see, that we pass by without a thought, might similarly amaze us with their depth and their wonder, if we only had the time and opportunity to learn them. I am left with a sense of being surrounded by invisible riches.

@countrymetalhead I wondered when jacket fm would go away. I never made a recording on it, but I sometimes used to listen to music samples that other people did. I haven't been on borail in ages.
@countrymetalhead hi Wes, I checked and it does not look like you were following me on this instance which is the dragons cave. Maybe I missed something because it is kind of hard to get to the followers list with the regular mastodon, but I didn't see you.
