Tracking the Taliban's (Mis)Treatment of Women

When Afghan women step out of their homes, everywhere they look they see a range of Taliban restrictions affecting all aspects of society and their lives — from education and employment to public services and access to justice. This interactive graphic depicts what they see through their burqas — the breadth of the Taliban’s gender apartheid — and serves as a portal to learning more about Taliban restrictions on women’s social and political life. Along with a description of the types of restrictions the Taliban have imposed, clicking on an “X” links to USIP’s documentation of the relevant decrees, orders and edicts issued by the Taliban since they took power in August 2021.

She was lucky to escape Afghanistan. Two years later, she’s stuck in limbo.

This former commander of an Afghan military all-female special ops team, Mahnaz Akbari was among the 77,000 U.S. allies successfully evacuated to the United States...her status here still isn't cleared up as Congress has failed to deliver on the promises made to our allies...

'Additionally, “even though most of it is based in Africa, paleoanthropology is so white,” she says. As a Black African woman, “it was such a lonely place, actually, for a long time.” Schroeder has struggled to publish papers, received sexist reviews on papers and experienced instances of blatant racism.'

I saw Blue Oyster Cult yesterday at the Clark County Fair, a big crowd which they rocked, the music powerful and eloquent and elegant. Great showmanship. They're going on now to headline a rock festival in the UK. Met with them backstage, to give them some new lyrics by hand, and chat. Here's a pic with my wife Micky, me, Don and Eric from BOC and with us is our young friend and BOC fan, Phoenix. Eric is holding a copy of my novel SubOrbital 7.
