"Not the odds, but the stakes."
That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in journalists covering the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy.
Not the odds, but the stakes.
Here's the New York Times with what I mean by the odds:
"Can Mr. Trump show enough restraint to persuade moderate Republicans and independent swing voters to choose him over President Biden in 2024?" https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/21/us/politics/trump-2024-campaign-indictment.html
Of those 28 legitimate complaints brought against Trump, the FEC's own lawyers found reason to believe that campaign finance violations had occurred in 22 of them.
In every instance, the Republican commissioners voted to block action.

Love to see how mad the Onion is here. More folks should be this mad about this.
If you want a really solid critique, it's actually here too. They put their *all* into this piece and while it's sarcastic as usual, it really does cover *so many* aspects of how horrible the current trend of "news" in this space has been.
Go read it:

The task of reporting is not a simple one. Each and every day, reporters and editors at publications like The Onion make difficult decisions about which issues should receive attention, knowing that our coverage will influence not only how people think, but also how they act. This responsibility is at the core of an…
Police are worse than useless. They are actively harmful. We just had a medical emergency with one of our encampment residents. She was flat on the ground, stuporous, with severe decerebrate posturing and breathing normally.
The cops radioed it in as an overdose (which means EMS will take forever to respond), even though there were no signs of OD. To make things worse, the 911 dispatcher confirmed to me that the cops had given them the complete wrong address in their call.
Even worse, I was the only one on scene carrying Naloxone. The cops made everything worse and were not even prepared for an overdose. The cops asked me several times if I could administer Narcan; I had to correct them repeatedly and tell them there were no overdose symptoms and that the woman had a recent history of aneurysm. They stood there doing nothing, and were afraid to even touch her.
NEVER assume that police have made a proper emergency call. Always call 911 yourself. Carry Narcan.
Lying on incident reports (or on the stand) should be a firing offense for police officers.

Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & #music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the 1st Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought music & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.
Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. https://www.wendycarlos.com #history #HistoryRemix

Cops in Nevada had better start behaving. The state’s Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that not only guarantees residents the right to sue under state law, but won’t allow officer…
