"Not the odds, but the stakes."

That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in journalists covering the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy.

Not the odds, but the stakes.

Here's the New York Times with what I mean by the odds:

"Can Mr. Trump show enough restraint to persuade moderate Republicans and independent swing voters to choose him over President Biden in 2024?" https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/21/us/politics/trump-2024-campaign-indictment.html

Trump’s Potential Indictment Could Alienate Some G.O.P. Voters in 2024

The former president strengthened his political position in recent weeks, but an impetuous response to his potential indictment could alienate voters he will need to win back the White House.

@jayrosen_nyu I like it!
Real information we could all use.
@jayrosen_nyu This manipulative narcissist should never be allowed near government again. Plain dangerous.
@jayrosen_nyu Mr. Rosen, you keep writing as if there's a way to save the media. But there isn't. Only the willfully clueless and/or terminally nostalgic still read the NYT or watch CNN. I would be far more interested in your thoughts on how we can most productively navigate this new post-MSM reality, rather than see you keep banging your head against a wall in the futile hope of returning journalism to something it will never be again.
@sirc @jayrosen_nyu while the bad faith of the media is obvious (to many), because of its ownership by the bad actors, pointing out the bias is a public service. Not to the media, but to us.

@sirc

Oh, okay, I will stop. Thanks for the tip!

@jayrosen_nyu Snark. Stay classy, dude.

@sirc

You're just another internet troll. Don't expect deference.

@jayrosen_nyu That's a laughable slur. I'm sorry I made the mistake of actually engaging one of your posts, on a subject of great concern to me, & commenting thoughtfully on it. I won't make that mistake again.
@jayrosen_nyu does NYT have any worthwhile political coverage? Virtually everything I’ve read is either “both sides” coverage or analysis done using Republican friendly framing.
@jayrosen_nyu Sorry but he’s incapable of doing anything like that. His ego and fourth grade vocabulary will always get in the way!
@jayrosen_nyu it’s always baffled me that election coverage is only about the campaigns and not about the policies. Policies are why elections matter. “The poll shows who’s in the lead” should be accompanied with something like “suggesting that likely voters prefer this policy with these consequences”

@jayrosen_nyu The fact that a guy who should be in an orange jumper is still in play for the GPO as their presidential candidate still mystifies me.

But this is the party that complained about the left "weaponizing" government then uses the very same tools to keep the Cheeto out of prison.

@jayrosen_nyu Exactly, thank you. It's a mantra. Maybe if we repeat it to journalists often enough, they'll take it in and cover news that way.

@jayrosen_nyu @brendannyhan mathematically speaking “expectation not probability” also applicable to “house prices will never fall”—-> 2008 crisis, “interest rates will not rise” —> 2023 bank failures

“impact not likelihood”

@jayrosen_nyu @lolgop odds are for betting and that’s it. I pay attention bc I consider betting on it but publishing the potential outcomes is a much more important and consequential task
