Coastal #ecology (especially #wetlands and #phycology), #photography, #wilderness. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Wandering the west coast. Assist Prof Research at Oregon State Univ, but content my own.
The #kelp Pterygophora californica at Muir Beach, Marin Co, Calif for #phycologyfriday. This species is typical in the subtidal kelp forest understory but at some sites can be abundant in the low intertidal too.
Apparently it's a stereotype that scientists aren't creative. So share your creative side! I knit. I can only knit square shapes, no cables. Complicated for me is a hat. But choosing the yarn and the pattern of knit/purl, that's all a creative endeavor! (Thanks @DrPlanktonguy for the idea to share! )
Black and white #darkroom print of giant #kelp from Carmel, California for #PhycologyFriday #algae
There was enough rain in #DeathValley Natl Park with this late #winterstorm that a small lake was reconstituted in #Panamint Valley. At upper left is Telescope Peak in the Panamint Range at just over 11,000 ft. It was very cool to be in the #desert for this historic storm.
Seapalms, Postelsia palmaeformis, along the Mendocino County coast in Calif. This annual #kelp species thrives on wave swept rocky shorelines in the northeast Pacific. Large waves help remove #intertidal competitors, namely mussels, allowing the alga to colonize popular real estate on the shore. #PhycologyFriday
Mapping changes in temperature: every year from 1850 to 2022
Codium setchellii for #phycologyfriday from the Marin County, Calif coast. I love photographing this unusual green #alga! #seaweed #Chlorophyta
Ahnfeltiopsis gigartinoides growing on sand-influenced rocks in the low #intertidal near Muir Beach, Marin Co, Calif. #PhycologyFriday #algae #Rhodophyta #seaweed
Prickly pear #cactus, Opuntia, at #JoshuaTree National Park. #MojaveDesert.

Official launch of AlgaeTraits, a trait database for (European) seaweeds
AlgaeTraits provides standardised trait information for all European seaweeds, enabling the use of trait-based approaches over broad taxonomic, spatial and temporal scales. AlgaeTraits is a thematic subregister of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) which links to AlgaeBase, the most complete database on global algal taxonomic information.
