Thanks to BR - Bayerischer Rundfunk and ARD for inviting me to speak about the topic “Can AI lie? How manipulative are chatbots” in an episode of the IQ -Wissenschaft und Forschung Podcast.

We discussed some recent studies on "deception abilities" in LLMs and I am happy to see that what me and colleagues Benjamin Lange and Katharina Prof. Dr. Zweig had to say wasn't condensed into the clickbait headlines it could have been used for and was rather used to raise awareness about limitations of GenAI and human control and responsibility to decide where to use LLMs and where *not to*.

Some aspects discussed were #hallucinations, #sycophancy, the definition of what a #lie implies, an understanding of #truth, #theory of #mind, #intentionality, and consciousness.

Sprache kann „eine Fülle von Phänomenen […] ‚vergegenwärtigen‘, die räumlich, zeitlich und gesellschaftlich vom ‚Hier und Jetzt‘ abwesend sind“ und dafür sorgen, dass „eine ganze Welt in einem Augenblick ‚vorhanden‘“ ist (Berger et al., 1980, S. 41). Sprachgebrauch ist selten oder vielleicht nie nur inhaltlich, manche Begriffe oder Worte können „signalhaft eingeschnapp[t]“ (Adorno, 1973, S. 417) sein, sie sind außerdem im zwischenmenschlichen Gebrauch nicht „unberührt von Geschichte“ und keine „austauschbaren Spielmarken“ (Adorno, 1973, S. 418). Rezeptionsseitig ergänzen Menschen als Lesende auf verschiedene Weisen hinzu. Hier finden sich einige Überlegungen dazu, was daraus folgt, wenn Textsequenzen nicht von Menschen, sondern von generativen KI-Modellen generiert werden.

👾 Technical objects always afford more than what is intended by providers in their marketing logic. The spaces of possibility that lie beyond the logic of exploitation in the nature of the object indicate what will happen sooner or later in the application of technologies anyway- and the better you know your way around, the easier it is to help shape, counteract, be creative, make informed decisions and act in a self-determined way.

What's more, dealing with these things is simply a lot of fun. Thank you very much for the invitation and the positive feedback! The slides will soon be available on the University of Hohenheim website.
