PSA: Google has now begun to roll-out the Ad Topics "feature" onto Android itself. It's not just in Chrome you have to disable the settings. Please #Boost to spread awareness.

If you didn't get the pop-up screen on your Android device (it looks like the first two screenshots), to opt-out of these settings:

  • Go to your device Settings
  • Press "Google"
  • Press "Ads"
    • While you're here, press the "Delete Advertising ID" button and delete it
  • Press "Ad Privacy"
  • Review: "Ad Topics", "App-suggested ads", and "App Measurement". Make sure all are labelled as "OFF". (This page will look like the third screenshot)
  • If you don't see "Ad Privacy" in Step 4 then it means that it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. You might need to wait and check back in a couple of days to see if/when it has been implemented to disable these settings.

EDIT: There's another setting to review. In step 2, scroll to "Personalize using shared data". Turn everything off.

Rezilion Researchers Uncover New Details on Severity of Google Chrome Zero-Day Vulnerability (CVE-2023-4863) - Rezilion

Rezilion researchers have uncovered additional details about CVE-2023-4863 a Google Chrome Vulnerability that is exploited in the wild.

I scrambled to integrate his data into my platform. I added analytics tools. And then I ran my first few analyses. And my jaw dropped.

"Well, that's a bit to much of a price increase even given higher energy prices."

So I started to dig. And boy did I find a lot of things...

A great part of Huawei’s supposed infamy can be boiled down to two things. The first is that the company is actually very well-run and extremely innovative—a fact that Westerners, convinced of their own technical superiority and the relationship between technological innovation and a particular set of political/cultural values, find unnerving.

The second is the view that because the founder is a member of the party, it must be controlled by the Chinese government.

The Side of Huawei We Don’t Know

Though often condemned and suspected by Western policymakers and experts, the company’s origins and unique governance system are poorly understood.

“The root of the problem is that housing is treated as an instrument of profit, one in which the exchange value is prioritized over its use value. The sole solution is to decouple housing from profit and make it a human right.” — @mcmansionhell

On Gentrification, We Don’t Know What We’re Talking About

Rather than understand gentrification as a systemic issue, the term has simply become an insult people throw around.

Added support for media to the Dumbo tweet importer (for self-hosters). Also updated the patches to work with Mastodon 4.x.

The Twitter dump does not contain original photos, weirdly, so it reaches out and downloads the original from Twitter before uploading.

Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to #Firefox as Google ramps up the enshitification of #Chrome, let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.

Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal #gmail in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.

It'll take you 30 seconds to set up.

Firefox Multi-Account Containers – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)

Download Firefox Multi-Account Containers for Firefox. Firefox Multi-Account Containers lets you keep parts of your online life separated into color-coded tabs. Cookies are separated by container, allowing you to use the web with multiple accounts and integrate Mozilla VPN for an extra layer of privacy.

If you work in tech and haven't heard about "being glue", I would say that it's vital to read about it:

You'll either feel extremely heard, or it will open your eyes to what some of your (disproportionately female) coworkers struggle with on a regular basis.
