Another update on one my favorite #MossyEarth projects, the restoration of coral reefs, and the ecosystems they support, in areas of the sea floor in Indonesia that had been devastated by human activity.

About a year ago, @ra and I learned of a magic trick where the performer holds an unknotted string and knots it into a trefoil without releasing the ends of the string. A mathematical impossibility! After learning how it is done, we wrote a paper explaining how to execute a similar trick for producing any knot!

We have also recorded a few videos: https://tube.mathe.social/w/p/2M22RF21tkUwC8Hm4Cr8XM
Thanks to @tomkalei for hosting them on his PeerTube instance!

We take a close look at a classical magic trick performed with a string, where a trivial knot is seemingly isotoped into a trefoil, and generalize it to a family of magic tricks for transforming the unknot into other knots. We encode such a trick by depicting the target knot as a special type of knot diagram, which we call a "knotholder diagram". By proving that all knots admit knotholder diagrams, we obtain variants of the trick for producing every knot.

This was a fun collaboration! See also the crypto challenge at the end of the final strip in the 5-part series.
Just unearthed this music video of the vocal quartet Säje, covering a song of Björk. I remember enjoying it very much a few years ago and lamenting that I could not find it again. For some reason, it is unlisted on Youtube, so I am glad I stumbled across it again.

"While some people benefit from automobility, nearly everyone—whether or not they drive—is harmed by it. Slowing automobility’s violence and pollution will be impracticable without the replacement of policies that encourage Car Harm with policies that reduce it.”
This is a quote from a 2024 paper entitled, "Car harm: A global review of automobility’s harm to people and the environment", and I finally made a video about it (now on Nebula & Patreon):

Today I found myself annoyed at the traditional design of the piano keyboard. It makes tasks that should be straightforward, like transposing chords and melodies, take up a lot of effort, and it is hard to get a physical feel for each chord type -- one has to learn each chord _in each key_. So I ended up going on a rabbit hole learning about the JankĂł keyboard design. Here is someone who got proficient at it demonstrating how it works:
