Physicist by training, working in computational neuroscience πŸ§ πŸ”¬πŸ’» at the @dzne. Interested in how neural dynamics and learning shape brain function and behavior, using modeling and data analysis.

In this episode, Paul Middlebrooks talks with Cristopher Moore about the nature of computation and whether we should think of neural activity as computing.

A big new release after months of work is a good time to mention that #Mastodon is crowdfunded. Unlike many other platforms out there, we don’t take venture capital, we don’t sell ads, and we don’t sell your data. We rely on your donations to pay our team. Please consider chipping in:

Cleve Moler, #mathematician, cofounder of #MathWorks, and creator of #MATLAB, has died at 86. Say what you will about MATLAB, but its impact on #ScientificComputing is undeniable. As a student, I felt almost rebellious when I started coding in MATLAB instead of #Fortran 🀘

🧠 What can a single neuron compute?

A new #bioRxiv #preprint introduces #TwinProp, using a differentiable digital twin to optimize synaptic strengths and locations in a detailed layer 5 #pyramidal #CellModel. One #neuron classified images and speech and even solved 10-bit parity with 91% accuracy. The key: distributed #dendritic nonlinearities, especially #NMDA-dependent integration:

I never #tootprint'd my Contactomes paper, which is some of the science I am most proud of... so strap in :)

Here's a beautiful shot of a single dendritic spine (black). It has ~3 synaptic partners (blue). But it has nearly TWENTY contact partners (red), which could be electrically or chemically influencing it! Made in #blender3d #blender @Blender

This is the conclusion of a new study led by Bernstein member Patrick Krauss from @fau.de, among others.

The #NEST Conference 2026 (https://nest-simulator.org/conference) has just started! I’m looking forward to two days of talks and discussions on #NeuralNetworks and the latest advances in the #NESTSimulator ✌️

Btw: We’re using #GatherTown again and I love creating these #8bit-like avatars there πŸ‘Ύ

I just pushed #OMIO to version v0.2.2. You can now reuse existing disk-backed #Zarr caches instead of rebuilding them every time an image is opened. OMIO stores cache metadata directly in the Zarr store and validates compatibility automatically before reuse ✌️
