Former teacher Grace Linn, who is 100 years old and whose husband was killed in WWII fighting Nazism, deserves a medal. This week, she addressed a Martin County, Florida, school board meeting to speak out against banning of books.
A woman in the school district, Julie Marshall, has sparked a movement to take books she does not like from school shelves. Grace Linn responds:

Cat training... isn't. The popular conception of "training" is that we tell the being what to do and they do it. Because if they don't do it, we will make things unpleasant for them.
This doesn't work for cats.

The very idea of legislatively prohibiting education about "scientific theories" would be laughable were it not so harrowing to contemplate, particularly in the shadow of the very real legal fights within living memory about whether it is legal to teach the theory of natural selection. Nearly every scientific concept we take for granted (i. e. gravity) is classified as a Theory because scientists are keenly aware that our comprehension of natural phenomena is incomplete.
I am reminded of the historical anecdote - once presented as a curious humorous silly exercise, now more of a cautionary tale - about how one state tried to put forward legislation defining π to be equal to 3.2. I wish I were making this up.

The Indiana Pi Bill is the popular name for bill #246 of the 1897 sitting of the Indiana General Assembly, one of the most notorious attempts to establish mathematical truth by legislative fiat. Despite its name, the main result claimed by the bill is a method to square the circle, although it does imply various incorrect values of the mathematical constant π, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The bill, written by a physician who was an amateur mathematician, never became law due to the intervention of Prof. C. A. Waldo of Purdue University, who happened to be present in the legislature on the day it went up for a vote. The mathematical impossibility of squaring the circle using only compass and straightedge constructions, suspected since ancient times, had been rigorously proven 15 years previously, in 1882 by Ferdinand von Lindemann. Better approximations of π than those implied by the bill have been known since ancient times.
