I'm always both deeply uncomfortable and angry anytime people claim that the power to oppress is necessary to protect that same oppressed group.
It's always patriarchal. It's men supposedly "protecting" women when men are the primary source of violence against women. It's adults supposedly "protecting" children when adults are the overwhelming source of violence against children.
Both assume the power--the violence--inherent in authoritarian social structures can be turned towards good, when the incredible levels of violence against the gender marginalized and the young is made POSSIBLE and MAINTAINED by those very patriarchal structures.
And with this focus comes an attempt to primarily "stop abuse" by controlling the actions, presentation, and behaviour of the oppressed. Women need to dress differently. Children need to be constantly surveilled.
Instead of making life miserable for the oppressed, make life miserable for predators, for abusers, for rulers. Make their lives unlivable.
And stop pretending that the power to oppress is something neutral or helpful, because that's utter bullshit.
