Ukraine: IFJ and EFJ call on government to reform new media law / IFJ

Ukrainian journalists' organisations are sounding the alarm. The new Media Law signed by President Volodymir Zelensky on 29 December threatens media freedom. The International and European Federations of Journalists (IFJ-EFJ) call on the European Commission and the Council of Europe to convince the Ukrainian authorities to review the law, in consultation with journalists' organisations and the media.

Ukraine: IFJ calls on the government to revise new media law / IFJ

President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed into law a controversial bill that expands the government's power to control the media, endangering press freedom and media pluralism in the country. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its Ukrainian affiliates, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine (IMTUU), in calling on the government to revise the new legislation and to start a broad inclusive dialogue with journalists’ unions and the media sector.

our affiliate, the Asociación Nacional de Periodistas del Perú (ANP) since the start of political crisis on 7 December. We condemn the violence unleashed by the State against the population and journalists, who work to expose threats to democracy.

Perú: At least 72 attacks against media recorded by ANP since start of political crisis / IFJ

The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP), an IFJ affiliate, has recorded at least 72 cases of violations of the work of media and aggressions against journalists, amid the political and social crisis gripping the country. Among these assaults, was an attack by the police on photojournalist Aldair Mejía, working for EFE agency, who was first threatened and then shot in the leg. Since the outbreak of the protests that followed the dismissal of former president Pedro Castillo, 46 people have been killed. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns the violence unleashed by the State against the population and against media workers, who are carrying out the indispensable work of exposing threats to democracy.

#Algerie🇩🇿 : Le journaliste algérien Ihsane El Kadi a été placé en détention provisoire. La FIJ appelle les autorités à libérer immédiatement El Kadi et revenir sur sa décision de fermer les médias Radio M et Maghreb Emergent.

Algérie : un journaliste en détention provisoire pour financement étranger / FIJ

Le journaliste Ihsane El Kadi, fondateur et directeur de la radio en ligne algérienne Radio M et du média Maghreb Emergent, a été arrêté le 24 décembre 2022 et placé en détention provisoire le 29 décembre pour des soupçons de financements étrangers de son média. La Fédération internationale des journalistes (FIJ) appelle les autorités algériennes à libérer immédiatement El Kadi et à revenir sur la décision de fermer les deux médias qu'il détient.

#Brazil🇧🇷: At least 11 attacks against journalists were documented by our affiliate the Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas (FENAJ) during the assault on government buildings by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

We deplore the attacks, and will continue to monitor unfolding anti-democratic developments.

At least eleven attacks against journalists and media workers were documented by the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ) on 8 January, during an assault on government buildings by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate FENAJ in deploring the attacks, and will continue to monitor unfolding anti-democratic developments, which have led to media workers becoming collateral damage in their role of protecting citizens’ right to know.

#Bangladesh🇧🇩: Very sad news - The police are investigating the alleged ‘suicide’ of female journalist Shabnam Sharmin. The IFJ demands a swift investigation into the case, that also clarifies whether her profession had any link with the incident.

The International and European Federation of Journalists (IFJ-EFJ) raise the alert on the increasing threats surrounding journalists and media workers reporting on the tensions between Serbia and Kosovo from the North of Kosovo, and joins its affiliate the Association of Journalists in Kosovo (AJK) in asking the competent authorities, including the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX), the Kosovo Force (KFOR) and the police, to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of journalists reporting on the ground.

How to track digital mercenaries behind disinformation

It is just as important to identify the actors who perpetuate disinformation as it is the false facts themselves: if a journalist is able to target the source of false information, they can expose and neutralize it.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today released its annual list of journalists and media staff killed in work-related incidents, warning of the return of the open season on media professionals with a spike in the numbers of killings from last year. The IFJ has recorded 68 killings of journalists and media staff during 2022 compared to 47 last year - a reversal of the decline recorded in recent years. There were also 11 deaths linked to accidents and illness, including three journalists and media workers who passed on while reporting on the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

🔴68 journalists and media staff have been murdered in 2022. A worrisome spike in the numbers of killings from last year, according to the IFJ's Killed List.
