I feel like I might have been one of these creatures in a former life: rooted, and haphazardly winding up a scaffold of a self so that the tiny photosynthesizing critters laying in wait at the tips of my fingers can draw down the energy of the sun, through my body, and into the living Earth. Maybe it will be my next life. 🍀

RECORD BODY COUNT did it for me. That's the song that made me a fan. It caught me and pulled me through it. The odd meter worked like switchbacks on a trail, leading me on this singular journey. Just a kid sick of bullies leaving school. But just when you think he's going to get away with it...well, he does, in a way. It still shocks me a little to hear myself sing, 'he fell asleep before he died'.

PEOPLE FROM EARTH, composed by friends and family members of the Rheos' world, released a weird and wonderful album as well. It was as tender and true as the Rheostatics, but maybe a little wilder and more innocent. When I was in the mode of making mixed tapes, AQUAMAN made it onto many many many tapes. I still know all the words.

Martin Tielli's solo albums, WE DIDN'T EVEN SUSPECT THAT HE WAS THE POPPY SALESMAN, and OPERATION:INFINITE JOY have been on my top 10 most-llistened-to-albums-of-the-year every year since their release. The song MY SWEET RELIEF still rings like a clapper striking a bell. Like it's saying -- cleanly, clearly, and without remorse, -- You are not normal, and Fuck them. The art, though, the art.....if I didn't have a CD player, the albums' art is worth contemplating all on their own.
