Shâtaz is two years older than Graznikh and simultaneously his best friend and worst rival. Two years ago they got themselves into some serious trouble that somehow got Graznikh sent to the mines for life and landed Shâtaz a spot in the region's most infamous raiding band. Graznikh still hasn't forgiven him for it.
It is custom for newborn Elves to get names from the father and mother separately. Whin's parents both chose the same name but for completely different reasons; Estelmaitë named her "the shadow of a birch" b/c of her short stature and Terenwen named her "an eddy at sea" b/c of her restless nature.
It can also be interpreted as "a swirling shadow" which is kinda prophetic considering her later fate.

Whindaër's name has a double meaning. Hwindë/Whindë/Whinn means "eddy" or "birch" in both Quenya and Sindarin. Dae means "shadow" or "shade" in the early Noldorin dialect of Sindarin and aer means "sea".
So it can both mean "the shadow of a birch" or "a whirlpool at sea". (1/2)
