πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬KS3 Science Week has been packed with hands-on fun!πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬

Students explored the life cycle of chicks πŸ₯ (including holding them!), made salt water cells and created test tube water xylophones 🎢

🐣 Science Week is getting exciting! 🐣

Our Key Stage 3 students are following the amazing journey from egg to chick as part of Science Week. You can watch the chicks hatching live!

It’s a great chance to observe development, life cycles, and a little bit of the wonder of nature.

Last week in Key Stage 3 Science, students explored chemical reactions by reacting metals with water and acids, and developed their practical skills through distillation experiments.

A fantastic week of hands-on learning and scientific discovery in the lab! πŸ”¬βœ¨

Thank you to Miss Hardy for organising an inspiring Doctor Career Talk for our Sixth Form students πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

Students gained valuable insight into studying medicine, life at university, and the journey to becoming a doctor β€” a fantastic opportunity to support their future aspirations! πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ“š

Our Year 12 Biology students recently visited the Biomedical Science Laboratory at DRI, gaining a valuable insight into clinical laboratory work πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬

They were shown how patient samples such as blood, urine, faeces and swabs are processed, how biochemistry and microbiology are used in diagnosis, and observed samples linked to infections including E. coli, Salmonella, MRSA, UTIs, sepsis, STIs and meningitis.

A great experience for students considering careers in science πŸ‘

πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬ The Science Department visited Doncaster Museum to explore ways the exhibits can be embedded into our science curriculum.

We explored themes such as extinction, pollution and fossils, and were fascinated by a remarkable fossil of a large marine reptile β€” complete with its last meal of fish and squid still preserved! 🐟

A brilliant opportunity to bring real-world science into the classroom and inspire curiosity beyond the lab.

In Science students have been exploring air resistance by designing and testing their own parachutes – congratulations to the winning group pictured! πŸ‘
In Chemistry, pupils also got hands-on by modelling the atomic structure using biscuits, making learning both visual and memorable. πŸ”¬πŸͺ
A great example of curiosity, teamwork, and fun in science!

πŸ”¬ Year 9 Science in Action! πŸ§ͺ

Our Year 9 students have begun their GCSE Biology journey by developing essential practical skills using microscopes ✨

This week, they practised accurate focusing techniques while observing a fascinating range of specimens, including:
🩸 blood samples
πŸ¦‹ insect wings
🐜 termite heads
🌱 plant stems

A fantastic start to building confidence with core biological skills that will support them throughout their GCSE studies! πŸ‘πŸ”

Two Year 10 students represented the school at the Northern Final of a STEM competition at the University of Huddersfield πŸŽ“, after winning the regional event last year. The competition focused on computer science, programming and robotics βš™οΈ, challenging students to program a robot to navigate a maze. They also attended an talk on robot dogs, humanoids and future career pathways πŸ€–. Although they didn’t win, they performed extremely well and were a real credit to the school πŸ‘

πŸ”¬βœ¨ What an exciting and busy Science Week at Hall Cross! βœ¨πŸ”¬

From designing and building ski lifts, carrying out colourful flame tests, to testing leaves for starch, our students have thrown themselves into science with curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm all week long πŸ§ͺ🌿πŸ”₯

The Science Department would like to wish all students, staff, and families a very Merry Christmas.
