"If you hear something calling your name in the woods... no you didn't". This #horror title is living up to the hype for me. Black woman returns to her hometown in Rust Belt PA and tragedy strikes - in a way that mirrors something from her own youth. I am from that part of PA and the race, class and gender identity revealed in this story ring VERY true. It also scratches the itch of #Appalachian folklore. Well written, creepy and suspenseful. #bookstodon #books
I completed Ghost Story (Peter Straub) this morning. It's a crime that I waited all these years to read this magnificent story. Most excellent! If you've never read it, and enjoy a drama with mystery, suspense, and a touch of the supernatural, this is for you! #GhostStory #horror

Shadow Bites: An Alan Baxter Horror Sampler by Alan Baxter

@stina_marie Re the first sentence: this is my thought about city living😂

I'm no fan of the sun either, but have have no problem with it as long as it's there 24/7. I just don't like the transistion from darkness to bright light. And not a big fan of heat. Luckily not a problem here.

Fun fact: us red heads handle the polar nights better, bc the gene that gives us red hair also makes our bodies produce vitamin D faster and more efficiently (=less prone to colds and depression).

@stina_marie
It's very accurate, though😂

It varies so much from person to person, and it's one of the reasons we struggle so much to keep doctors and teachers here: some can't handle the perpetual sunlight, while others would rather die than live through another winter of seemingly neverending darkness (I'm not even kidding; our Icelandic neighbour finally took to his senses – after a little too much talk about shooting himself – and now pisses off to Spain each winter😅).

@stina_marie I hate that we, as a society, decided that early birds were somehow "better people" than night owls.

One thing that might interest you, since I saw you mention the sun: I live in the arctic part of Norway, where we have midnight sun for ~80 days, and being a night owl has little to do with hours of daylight: I'm exactly the same during that period as now (our equally long polar night). Would love to see more research on this!

Spring is my least favorite season😅

@stina_marie Same! So much more clear-headed/happy/creative at night. I get something very close to depression if I have to get up early for long periods of time, because the hours when I feel most content/confident/myself, are swallowed by (not enough) sleep.

I used to beg for nightshifts at my last job, but ofc there's a law against working many nights in a row. So I had to struggle through long periods of dayshifts, while my early-bird colleague got sick from nightshifts🙃

165. More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon

🦊Sci-fi (though I'd argue it's genre-defying) written in 1953.
🦊Explores how religion fucks girls over, how a "found family" can be as challenging as the one you're born into, and the challenge of being different in a homogenous society.
🦊Telepathy! Anti-gravity! Evolution!
🦊Highly philosophical.

164. Upgrade by Blake Crouch

🦊Solid sci-fi action, set in a future where gene-manipulation is strictly regulated (for good reasons?).
🦊I don't want to spoil it, so let's settle for simple: The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
🦊Gene editing! Family feud! Sacrifices!
🦊Fast paced. If you enjoyed Dark Matter, you'll enjoy this one.
🦊Could have toned down the details on specific genes.
🦊Another one where I recommend you avoid both the blurb and all reviews if you plan on reading it.

163. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

🦊Dark Star Trilogy #1
🦊Shapeshifting tracker hired to trace boy.
🦊Witches. Albinos. Mercenaries. Gendershifters. Cannibals. Mermaids.
🦊My 2nd by James. Too much sexual assault/rape/pedophilia/incest that isn't being adressed in any way, in terms of trauma for the victims, for me to enjoy. The repeated descriptions of the stink of ass-cracks, cunts, and dongs – floppy or otherwise – also turned me off this book.
🦊Will not be continuing series.
