165. More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon

🦊Sci-fi (though I'd argue it's genre-defying) written in 1953.
🦊Explores how religion fucks girls over, how a "found family" can be as challenging as the one you're born into, and the challenge of being different in a homogenous society.
🦊Telepathy! Anti-gravity! Evolution!
🦊Highly philosophical.

164. Upgrade by Blake Crouch

🦊Solid sci-fi action, set in a future where gene-manipulation is strictly regulated (for good reasons?).
🦊I don't want to spoil it, so let's settle for simple: The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
🦊Gene editing! Family feud! Sacrifices!
🦊Fast paced. If you enjoyed Dark Matter, you'll enjoy this one.
🦊Could have toned down the details on specific genes.
🦊Another one where I recommend you avoid both the blurb and all reviews if you plan on reading it.

163. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

🦊Dark Star Trilogy #1
🦊Shapeshifting tracker hired to trace boy.
🦊Witches. Albinos. Mercenaries. Gendershifters. Cannibals. Mermaids.
🦊My 2nd by James. Too much sexual assault/rape/pedophilia/incest that isn't being adressed in any way, in terms of trauma for the victims, for me to enjoy. The repeated descriptions of the stink of ass-cracks, cunts, and dongs – floppy or otherwise – also turned me off this book.
🦊Will not be continuing series.

I got more #BookMail!

This time #AdrianTchaikovsky's City of Last Chances, and it's even more gorgeous than I imagined when I saw the cover reveal back in June.

Back then I said "This HAS to be one of the coolest covers of 2022! So much symbolism and detail, I felt like I'd read a whole book when I was done examining it. Out in December. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!"

The gold foiling really brings the cover to life, and I can't wait to read it!

162. The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex

🦊Retelling of vanishing of lighthouse keepers in Ireland.
🦊Was drawn to this one since I live close to, and have worked at, a lighthouse situated close to "Dead Man's Bay".
🦊The female characters might as well've been written by a man from years long past😬 All they talk about are cleaning, children, and men.
🦊While I enjoyed the bits about one person's descent into madness, the original mystery is more interesting than the book:
https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofScotland/The-Eilean-Mor-Lighthouse-Mystery/

The mysterious disappearance of the Eilean Mor lighthouse keepers.

What drove three experienced lightkeepers to abandon their post on a remote island in the Outer Hebrides?

First started on The Regulators, because it's the cover that goes first, and I was immediately drawn in.

Then I did a google search, and saw overwhelming consensus that one should read Desperation first (even though it doesn't matter), so switched to that one. Have now read 1/3 of Desperation, and I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm going back to The Regulators. I think I'll enjoy Desperation more after reading that one.

How cool is this?!

Possibly my last #bookmail of 2022, and LOOK AT THEM! Both #FirstEditions from 1996, both in excellent condition. I'm in love!

•The Regulators by 'Richard Bachman'
•Desperation by Stephen King

Thanks goes to @generalsheenanigans, without whose awesome #shelfies of her magnificent #Horror #BookCollection I wouldn't have known they existed🙌

161. Ghostwritten by Ronald Malfi

🦊A fantastic collection of 4 novellas with a common theme: the (possibly evil👀) magic of books!
🦊Favorites: The Skin of Her Teeth & This Book Belongs to Olo.
🦊Possessed books! Evil books! Pop-up books!
🦊Another 2022 favorite!

So happy to see @jeremycshipp's Bedfellow listed alongside several of my favorite #horror #books, and several more that are on my TBR. Well deserved👏👏👏

#Bedfellow is such a spectacular mindfuck of a book, and completely unforgettable.

Are the people behind #BargainBooks on Mastodon? I'd like to follow them: they obviously have great taste!

160. Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds

🦊The Inhibitors are aware of the space faring humans, and so the race for a cache of doomsday weapons is on!
🦊Captain, O Captain, why art thou so creepy?
🦊Pattern Jugglers! Treason! Factions!
