Shout out to Angelina McMillan-Major for her great moderation on the way forward, this panel with Sarah Andrew, Steven Zapata

Thanks @milamiceli @adrienneandgp and @timnit for your important work on data labor. https://www.are.na/block/19910157
“ we urge researchers and journalists to also center low-income workers’ contributions in running the engine of “AI” and to stop misleading the public with narratives of fully autonomous machines with human-like agency. “
The Exploited Labor Behind Artificial Intelligence - Adrienne Williams, Milagros Miceli and Timnit Gebru — Are.na

Supporting transnational worker organizing should be at the center of the fight for “ethical AI.”

We were particularly impressed with how Richard, a person far from academia, leaned on his faith and his commitment to his communities and the workers he supervises to come forward and share the truth ✊🏾 ✊🏾
The session on labor was our favorite because the SP🦜 authors and the 🔥 @safiyanoble, who welcomes a brave African data labeler to testify to the horrible realities of content moderation, how tech industry preys on vulnerable people in the Global South, duping them that they will be included in this powerful Western corporation, then traumatizing them, erasing their labor, and making it impossible for them to leave or complain.
Great job on the causes of hype, their consequences and how to mitigate them. @Riedl @asmelashteka
We were thankful for this day of clarity about machine learning hype after being overwhelmed by all the GPT-4 hype, which means OpenAI should officially rename itself as “Clo$edAI.”
@emilymbender and Angelina McMillan-Major did a great job in the opening session helping newcomers catch up with the debates around large models and help those of us who build these models move forward. https://www.vice.com/en/article/ak3w5a/openais-gpt-4-is-closed-source-and-shrouded-in-secrecy
OpenAI's GPT-4 Is Closed Source and Shrouded in Secrecy

GPT-4 is OpenAI's most secretive release thus far, and AI researchers are warning about the potential consequences.

“an LM is a system for haphazardly stitching together sequences of linguistic forms it has observed in its vast training data, according to probabilistic information about how they combine, but without any reference to meaning: a stochastic parrot 🦜.”
