An #introduction:
I'm Alex Hanna, the Director of Research for the Distributed #AI Research Institute. I'm a #sociology PhD who has been studying #tech and society for over 10 years. I'm involved in #labor and #trans organizing, and am currently Chair of Sociologists for Trans Justice. I sometimes teach at Cal #Berkeley. The rest of my free time goes to #RollerDerby -- I skate, announce, and sometimes referee with Bay Area Derby in #Oakland.
Wow -- what a great set of replies! Thank you everyone. For #1, I see it on the browser version now and will look for a better app. For #2, I see the point about how QT changes the dynamic, but still really wish for the ability to weave in references (not dunk). It sounds like getting & pasting the link to the toot I want to quote is the way to go, as @mikarv says.
@[email protected] the second is also an app thing, if you copy the link to a post and paste it, many apps will expand it as a visible link snippet. it wonât notify the poster so you should tag them if you want them to see your comment. people canât go from the post to your comment though as they can on the bird site. as mentioned elsewhere, bookmarks exist, but some apps donât implement all parts of mastodon as they arenât actively maintained and improved.
As I start using Mastodon more, there are a few features from the birdsite that I'm really missing:
1) The ability to bookmark posts. I see things and want to read them later...
2) The ability to quote another post and post about it (birdsite's QT)
#1 might be an app-level thing. Is there a good Android app for following Mastodon?
On an algorithmic platform, the more attention a post gets, the more itâs likely to reach other folks. Thatâs not true here! But that doesnât mean you shouldnât favorite posts! Hereâs a good way to think about it
Favorite - âI liked this post! Thanks for sharing it!â Hit that star to let the creator know you enjoyed the topic, are digging the conversation, or just think theyâre neat! This is super low impact and low effort, and has no consequences, but is a nice way to thank the person who wrote the thing!
Boost - âMore folks should see this!â Boosting a post puts it onto the Home Timelines of folks who follow you. This is really powerful here because it is the only way to get content seen on instances that donât already federate with the source. Here on the fediverse, we are the collective curators and surfacers, so use Boosts liberally for things you enjoyed, things that folks need to hear, and to help folks who need visibility and support #fediTips
You can catch the recording of our stream with Drs. Johnathan Flowers, Negar Rostamzedah and Jennifer Lena about AI Art over at YouTube!
And mark your calendars, next Wednesday at 9:30 AM, @emilymbender and I will poke at the "existential threat" of AI and their AGI minions.
1/ Reposting because people seem to be asking about it:
My proposal for news media and other organizations to stand up their own Mastodon instances, allowing de facto verified accounts (e.g. [email protected]) due to trusting the parent domain:
