How does my day job or life effect your writing?
I mean, for one, the constant crushing dispair of our world does a pretty good job destroying my momentum, but aside from that, wrote what you know.
Not that I know anything about clandestine assassination outfits or the arcane, but I know people. I know banter. I know timing and humor and the gays.

Much to my continued mortification, my parents have done so, along with a number of my friends. The exchange usually goes as follows:
Friend: Hey, I read your book.
Me: Oh no.
Friend: Yeah, I really liked it!
Me: I'm so sorry.

Natural calamities?
The real issue comes is from unnatural calamities, borne from stupid mages who think they can harness the power of something several magnitudes Deeper and Older than them. Blood for the Blood God isn't just a pithy saying in the world of mages. If you're giving Blood to the Blood God, you best hope you can keep the Blood God on the other side of the dimensional barrier or it's going to eat a city.

Mo: Hey, you also call me your 'idiot sister' at least three times a chapter.
Des: It's a term of endearment.
Mo: Really?
Des: No.
Katie: I still call Des 'Boss', which might as well be a term of endearment at this point.

I am generally an overwriter. Thank goodness. In both the Burkes novels that are out, I cut 10-20k from the initial drafts to make a more trim, streamlined experience. Every once in a while it's agony to kill a cool line, but it's ultimately worth it.
