But said social anxiety also means I get REAL TETCHY when an admin doesn't go with "Well shit, sign up here if you vibe with the rules *link to how to move*"
or
"Here's everything that seems to have happened up to the meltdown in that other server and what we try to do here to prevent that sort of thing."
but... instead... falls somewhere in between?
Makes all mastodon servers feel like ticking time-bombs just waiting for the right drama to hit before they blow...
@copperreddc I never said it was easy.
I said it's a lot of work... but not super complicated/difficult work requiring special training.
It's generally do-able if one doesn't let it pile up and knows when to ask for help.
My social anxiety means that I would make lots of extra work having to go "This person you're disagreeing-with doesn't mean it the worst way possible" which means any instance I ran would be rather small and probably block a lot of servers/folks.
Are you offering to mod?

"I don't seek to do it because I have really nasty social anxiety that I know would not let me have anything close to the equanimity required to be fair with Random Unwashed People from the Internet... "
Were I to run my own instance, it would be some tiny thing out of, like, 'eppynws.org' and probably wouldn't get much traffic/notice anyways.
@aphyr Moderating an instance is not difficult or hard. It takes work, but it's not particularly daunting or terrible work so long as you don't let it pile up. I don't seek to do it because I have really nasty social anxiety that I know would not let me have anything close to the equanimity required to be fair with Random Unwashed People from the Internet... but "oh well, I guess sometimes people are just gonna get piled on cantbehelped" approaches ignorance bordering on malice.
@aphyr Okay, if it's challenging and has a lot of nuance than two very large and public admin meltdowns Absolutely Should be something of interest to review and probably litigated, and not just reacted to 'take it easy and watch yourself' as you laid out in https://woof.group/@aphyr/110587990991781110
I know I am busting your balls but I feel like you're saying "This is nuclear reactor of complicated social stuff" at the same time as going "I have no interest in reviewing what happened at Fukushima and Chernobyl"
I'm not interested in litigating other admins' conflicts here, but I do want to remind myself as an admin how important it is to take things easy: to be measured about the policy positions I take, to watch out for my own emotional reactivity, and to keep the well-being of instance users in mind. As a Fedi user, to be cognizant of these dynamics and careful when I engage in The Discourse. And to always keep in mind that there's a human--lots of humans--on the other end of the line. ❤️
@aphyr okay... But is that any worse or more complicated than forum moderation was back in the day? I don't think it is.
These aren't new challenges. They aren't new struggles. They are As Old As The Internet. The flame wars and flouncing are the same as they were in 2005 (when it was all called 'drama'). The only big difference is that it's mastodon on activity pub instead of phpBB on http. Just a few extra layers of abstraction.
You already laid out the way to handle most of it.
How I often feel these days.
C'mon, peeps, if you're afraid to give up your fascist transphobic safety net, at least expand your audience with some alternate/backup sites to post updates.
