We unite the National Academies of Science of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom to provide independent science-based advice to policymakers in Europe.
Last week, EASAC held its annual Council Meeting in Nicosia, hosted by the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts and national partners. Discussions on #Science4Policy in times of crisis, strategy and partnership updates reinforced our mission to provide science advice for a resilient Europe.
Last week, the #EASAC Environment Steering Panel met in Amsterdam to advance its mission to provide science-based advice for EU environmental policy. A key topic of discussion was the upcoming project on water scarcity and retention in Europe. We thank the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) for hosting the meeting.

The EASAC Board met in Oslo on 27-28 April, kindly hosted by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Board members and programme directors discussed strategic challenges, upcoming milestones and ways to increase the impact of the science advice provided by European academies through EASAC.

In a letter to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), leading scientists, including #EASAC experts, urge the #IPCC to fix loopholes in its carbon-accounting rules.

They warn: splitting land-use and #energy carbon accounting lets countries claim #CO2 cuts not reflected in real emissions across the whole life cycle.

⚠️ South-East Europe’s #energy security faces heightened pressure amid escalating geopolitical tensions, including the wars in #Iran and #Ukraine, which are disrupting energy supplies and driving up prices.

♻️🔋 New pipelines are not the answer, said Neven Duić, Co-Chair of the #EASAC Energy Steering Panel at an event hosted by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) at @europarl_en last week. Instead, he urged the region to unlock its renewable potential.

♀️ Marie Curie made history in 1903 as the first woman to win a #NobelPrize, sharing it with her husband Pierre for their work on radioactivity. Yet 123 years on, women account for under 7% of all Nobel laureates.

In our miniseries on leading @IAPartnership we explore challenges and reflections on the position of women in the STEM community.

To every woman driving change in science and policy: Your rigour, empathy and bold vision inspire us and future generations. #FromPresenceToPower

On International Women’s Day, we launch #FromPresenceToPower, a mini-series on leading #WomenInScience in cooperation with @IAPartnership!

Our first feature, EASAC President Lise Øvreås reminds us that advancing gender equality in science requires structural change so women can lead, influence, and help shape the agenda. Let’s keep pushing for structural change, equal opportunity, and representation at every level.

💡 “It is important that the voice of science, channelled through the academies of #Europe, is heard and has an impact on #energypolicy decisions,” says Alessandro Allegra, EASAC’s Energy Programme Director.

🇪🇺 Alessandro joined EASAC in November 2025. Previously employed by the European Commission’s Science, Policy and Ethics Unit, he brings knowledge of and expertise at the science-policy interface to #EASAC.
