Post 3/4 for dplyr 1.1.0 is out! #rstats 🎉

Today, we'll look at how the vctrs 📦 has upgraded dplyr's vector functions, like `case_when()` and `between()`.

We'll also look at two powerful new helpers: `case_match()` and `consecutive_id()`!

dplyr 1.1.0: The power of vctrs

All of the dplyr vector functions, like `between()` and `case_when()`, are now powered by vctrs. We've also added two powerful new helpers: `case_match()` and `consecutive_id()`.

Why would Musk want to shut down research into misinformation, abuse, and hate speech online?

#rstats 📦 janitor 2.2.0 is out on CRAN! Nothing hugely breaking or revolutionary but lots of nice fixes and new tools that built up in the two years since v2.1.0.

Folks are treating the recent tech layoffs as something spontaneous. They were not. Apparently the current layoffs were orchestrated by hedge funds.

This hedge fund demanded that the big tech companies lay people off because they were being paid too much. Let that one sink in: a hedge fund manager saying that you're being paid too much.

Note that TCI is demanding that Google lay off more people.

I've been speaking and writing lately about how tech companies try to shift the discussion on misinformation, polarization, harassment, etc., away from the systems and structures that are inherently toxic and toward questions of individual behavior.

This way they can blame their own users for any pathology and steer clear of calls for systemic change.

Today Elon Musk has come through with a perfect illustration for my future talks.

New Calm Covid, unexpectedly soon: https://calmcovid.substack.com/p/xbb15-does-what-now-brief-update

XBB.1.5 *does* look very transmissible, but I keep seeing weird claims that "our tools don't work anymore," which just isn't true.

Prior immunity (from shots or infections) does seem not to be preventing transmission, so for people trying to avoid covid, this is a perfect time to upgrade/go harder on precautions for a bit.

XBB.1.5 does what now? (brief update)

Yep, it's real contagious. Nope, we're not helpless.
