Energy academic living in the North Country of NY @Stlawu. Dad of 4.

An absolute pleasure meeting @chrisnelder today to learn more about his amazing @TransitionShow podcast. How it has become one of the globally leading pods on energy transition issues and how they're made it work creatively, financially and professionally.

Awe inspiring stuff Chris. You're welcome on #Localzeropod any time to talk all things US #NetZero.

Enjoy the rest of your Scottish odyssey!

If I had to pick one chart from the Statistical Review of World Energy released today https://www.energyinst.org/statistical-review it would be this one. As you read all The Takes on this data, remember this one, and what it shows: The ONLY energy source with a growing share is renewables. Renewables (excluding hydro) met 84% of net electricity demand growth in 2022.

Now imagine what this chart will look like in 2030.

The Energy Institute is, as of 2023, the home of the Statistical Review of World Energy, published previously for more than 70 years by bp. The Statistical Review analyses data on world energy markets from the prior year. It has been providing timely, comprehensive and objective data to the energy community since 1952.

Unprecedented, there's that word again. Global sea surface temperatures over all the oceans between 60⁰N and 60⁰S are in uncharted territory this year. Chart shows deviation from the 1982-2011 average for the date.
History of global solar PV deployment:
1 GW per year was achieved in 2004
1 GW per month was achieved in 2010
1 GW per week was achieved in 2016
1 GW per day will be achieved in 2023
After a load of misleading and unhelpful recent stories warning that the world is "likely to breach 1.5C climate threshold by 2027," etc., Hannah Ritchie of Our World in Data helpfully explains what the data actually says and means:
The world is not going to pass its 1.5°C warming target in the next few years, but it's a signal of what's to come

No, the world is not going to pass its 1.5°C warming target in the next few years

What a temporary rise above 1.5°C means for our climate targets.

When a titan of industry begs you to regulate him… you really ought to listen.

would definitely read a long essay on the doomerism-industrial complex:

what it is

how it makes it hard to prioritize threats by treating all of them as existential

how the "marketplace of ideas" of social / mass media created it, by incentivizing everyone to turn their rhetoric to 11

for balance, musings by those who believe the entire idea of a 'doomerism industrial complex' is bunk, because we really DO face that many existential threats

ty in advance for anyone brave enough to tackle 🙏

In Ep. 197, @JigarShah explains why Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are critical to the deployment and integration of customer-owned energy resources (DERs), and make it possible to "electrify everything" without requiring massive expansion of the power grid.

Not only was it about time we had Jigar on the show... I'm happy to say that he changed my thinking about VPPs in some ways.

We're making this full episode free to all (no paywall) so enjoy (and then subscribe)!

[Episode #197] – Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) | The Energy Transition Show

Virtual Power Plants are finally ready to scale up, making it possible for the grid to do more with less as we “electrify everything.”
