#OTD in 1944, Italian priest Giuseppe Beotti was killed by German forces. Beotti was killed for sheltering Jews and aiding partisans during #WW2. His courage and sacrifice in the face of tyranny remain a powerful testament to the strength of human compassion and resistance.
OTD in 1945 (still during WW2), #Italy changed the law, granting Italian women the right to vote (except registered prostitutes working outside authorized establishments 🤷🏻♂️). They would vote for the first time on June 2, 1946. @histodons
#OTD in 1948, 54 Italian civilians were massacred in Mogadishu and 55 were wounded. The British authorities did nothing to stop the massacre. 14 Somali died, amongst them Hawo Tako, whilst protecting an Italian. However her image has being used as a symbol of tge independence. @histodons
#OTD in 1950, Modena: the police, armed with MGs, rifles and armoured cars opened fire against workers protesting against mass firings from a foundry for political reasons. 6 men died that day (3 of them ex-partisans), one of them lynched and shot in the head. 200 were wounded. #ColdWar @histodons
#OTD in 1896 , Italian doctor Scipione Riva Rocci, who studied medicine in Turin, published a paper describing his new invention, the sphygmomanometer. Since then his invention has been measuring the blood pressure of humans and animals all over the world. @histodons
@streetwriter the picture of the wounded soldier is from the Smithsonian web. I would like to see how the British authorities and in particular, the RAMC recorded everything. It will be interesting to see of there are studies about long term consequences for the civilian population
