The Hydrornis schwaneri or Bornean Banded Pitta is endemic to Borneo. They were described by French naturalist and ornithologist, Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte, 2nd Prince of Canino and Musignano, who named them in honor of German polymath, Dr. Carl Anton Ludwig Maria Schwaner. These majestic birds have a distinctive appearance complete with black crowns and masks, bright yellow eyebrows and throats, coffee-brown backs, intricately-barred underparts, and indigo belly patches.
